iCAN Challenge

iCan Challenge Walk - 50km Yesterday!

We did it! With unbelievable support from the entire school community, our team of parents, students and staff walked from St Kilda to Frankston in 9.5 hours. It was a long and challenging day, however as a team we dug deep, kept our spirits high and continued to put one foot in front of the other. With sore legs and blistered feet, we crossed the finish line at 4.28pm and felt an enormous amount of satisfaction in having completed the walk, and knowing we have raised a significant amount of money for the Royal Children's Hospital.

Like many other families at Wantirna College, most of us have stories that resonate when it comes to the Royal Children’s Hospital. My son survived childhood cancer and I will always be grateful to the medical support he was provided which saved his life and subsequently gave him a quality of life we didn’t think was possible.

Yesterday, our walkers experienced the discomfort and pain from walking such a long distance however, no one complained, and we persevered with the perspective of knowing that there are far more people, and children, worse off than us.

As we walked, we shared the journey with our school community via Facebook updates and videos.  We took requests for donation pledges, and gave shouts outs. Thank you to everyone who followed us on Facebook and made donations – we are still hoping to make our $50,000 target. Make sure you tune into the televised Good Friday Appeal on channel 7 tomorrow as we present the cheque alongside the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and put Wantirna College on the map!

Finally, thank you to the staff who worked behind the scenes in making an event like this happen; Our team of Education Support staff for being our crew and setting up the rest stations; the staff who walked; Peter Kos who did all the events and organisation; Nicholetta, our publicity queen; Tanya Moran our leader; And our staff back at school who volunteered to cover classes and ensure that school ran smoothly. A big shout out, also, to our legendry students who walked for 9.5 hours straight – we are super proud of you!
