Congratulations to Byrne for winning the Summer Reading Shield for the second year in a row. The Shield was accepted by the Byrne House Captains – Bowie, Sami, Amy and Jasmine. Well done to everyone who contributed to the Reading Shield this year. All points will also contribute to the House Cup at the end of the year.

Notes from a Reader

This week student, Katherine Styles had a chat with Ms Alexia Mingos about books.

KS: What book are you currently reading or read last?

AM: On recommendation from Mr Karwan, I read Battle Royale by Koushun Takam, which is essentially a far more brutal version of the Hunger Games. I stayed up all night reading it and then sent Karwan an angry message about the ending in the morning.

KS: What was your favourite book as a kid?

AM: Harry Potter. I would re-read the series every school holidays!

KS: What is your all-time favourite book genre?

AM: I don't necessarily read just one genre but the one I go back to the most is crime. You can't go wrong with a classic 'whodunit'.

KS: What book is next on your TBR list?

AM: I'm honestly not sure! I only really read books that are recommended to me now so I'm happy to take on suggestions.

KS: If you had to read books from only one author for the rest of your life, who would you pick?

AM: Probably Agatha Christie. There's so many of them.

KS: What makes or breaks a book for you?

AM: I need characters that I actually relate to or want to succeed. On the other hand, I have no patience for anything with cliché characters or plots, particularly in YA novels.

Always wanted to be a Shadow Judge? Here's your Chance!

The Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) have invited students across Australia to join the conversation about the annual Book of the Year shortlist and to choose their preferred winners. Shadow Judges read all six shortlisted books in their chosen category, then judge them using the same criteria that the official CBCA book judges use. It is a lot of fun, reading and discussing each book and deciding which title you think should win. Students who would like the opportunity to be part of the Wantirna College Shadow Judging community please email:
