Year 2 News

How We Express Ourselves:

At the end of last Term we had a wonderful celebration of our first Unit of Inquiry – How we express ourselves. The students loved sharing their Learning Journal with their parents or special friends and we had a fun day reflecting on the Unit. The students all looked fantastic dressed up as the Inside Out characters.

We are so proud of how settled the Year 2s were at the end of last Term and also how fantastically Term 2 has begun.

Who We Are

The Year 2 students have had a lot of fun beginning our new Unit of Inquiry – Who we are. This Unit focusses on living a healthy lifestyle, which includes eating a balanced diet and partaking in a variety of leisure activities, some of which are active and some of which help to keep us mindful and calm.

The students had a lot of fun going for a bushwalk through the outside areas of the school, we also did some aerobics, meditation and lastly enjoyed having a chat and enjoying our fruit break with our friends. The Year 2 students were also extremely engaged as they considering the original state of foods and that we can eat some foods straight from the tree, such as apples, whereas other foods need to be prepared before we can consume them.

We discussed how in the past people used to grow all their food, whereas now foods often go through multiple processes before reaching the supermarket or our homes. Students came up with some fantastic questions such as, ‘Where did the first seeds come from?’. Students also made some insightful observations such as not all fruits and vegetables have seeds, we can eat some seeds like the tiny strawberry seeds but not other seeds and one child even told us that a tomato plant had grown in her compost from old tomato seeds and her family is now enjoying the fruits from that plant. Well done Year 2s!

Maths

Telling the time – quarter past and quarter to:

In our Maths sessions we have been learning how to tell the time to the quarter past and quarter to. Time can be challenging for many students, and we have found that hands on learning and multiple exposures to the concept helps to consolidate their knowledge. We made some fantastic interactive clocks where the numbers fold down to reveal the minutes.

These clocks also show the phrasing we use. For example, the 3 folds down to reveal ‘quarter past’ and ’15 minutes’. The clocks look fantastic and are a very useful tool for the Year 2 students to use as they continue to consolidate and practice telling the time. We also had fun playing time games and making a ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’ booklet where students chose a time and provided four clues to enable others to guess their time.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day holds a different meaning for young children who are not yet of an age to understand the impact and atrocities of past wars. The Year 2s watched some age-appropriate ANZAC stories and we spoke about how lucky we are to live in Australia.

Some of the Year 2 students brought in flowers to lay under the flag poles and they were all very respectful during the service. We also made some ANZAC craft.
