Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden with 3/4KC

Yesterday was the last Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden lesson with 3/4KC.  The seven weeks with these students has flown by and they have certainly learnt to grow, harvest, prepare and share throughout each session.   The students have helped in numerous ways in the garden by getting their hands dirty and pulling out all the weeds that have grown throughout the summer.  In the last seven weeks, we have been able to harvest a variety of different foods including silverbeet, zucchini, beetroot, pumpkins, potatoes, rhubarb, mint, parsley, spring onions, lettuce, capsicum and even a small little watermelon.

For our last session, we cooked our famous St Mark’s vegetarian pizza with mushrooms, onions, zucchini, capsicum and fresh silverbeet.  It was so tasty and some children had multiple slices.  It was so good to see them trying so many flavours on their pizza.  We also thanked and farewelled all the wonderful parents and grandparents that came to help us throughout the program.  These fabulous volunteers were Wendy (Naomi’s mum), Kathy (Luka’s Grandma), Melinda (Luka’s Mum), Lilly (Lucas’ Mum), Cassie (Zayden’s Mum), Karen (Zayden’s Grandmother), Lesley (Bailey’s Mum), Shane (Bailey’s Dad), Zaid (Levi’s Dad), Jenny and Fuji (Matthew’s Mum and Dad).  We really appreciate the help they provided the students.  Next week we start our classes with the students from 3/4C.  Please message me via Seesaw or email me at tsiegert@smdingley.catholic.edu.au if you have any questions or would like to help in the kitchen.

Student Reflections:

Today we made a salad. It had lemon, capsicum, salt, pepper and mint. I enjoyed squeezing the lemons the most. We were lucky there weren't any injuries. We also got to the garden and we were planting garlic. By Viaan

Today was the last day of cooking and I’m sad. But I am not that sad because I still have another year of cooking cause I’m in grade 3.The year is going so fast and people are getting older. I loved it.  By Ellarose

It’s our last week for SAKGP (Stephanie Alexander Kitchen gardening program)! My favourite part was when my friend Ella accidently cut some onions and she cried! It was hilarious, but I also really, really cried too because it was cut in half but it needed some peeling still!  Luckily no one cut their fingers!!!  By G’zelle

My group had the main meal. We made yummy pizza.  We cut lots of onions and we all cried. I'm so hungry and I'm very excited to try it all .  We also cut a couple mushrooms.  By Luka

Today we made ANZAC biscuits, pizza, a corn salad and white bean dip. We also cut up our watermelon. It was a little bit hard to get the ANZAC biscuits to the right consistency, but in the end we got it right. By Natalia

THE LAST DAY OF COOKING. Today I made a pizza. We had to cut silverbeet and mushroom. We put the bowl first when we were grating the zucchinis. Meanwhile the others were putting the onions and mushrooms on the dough. Then they put the zucchinis in the pizza and put the pizza in the oven. By Ashwin

Today in SAKGP I made vegetarian pizza. Firstly I cut the silverbeet. After I cut the silverbeet I had to spread the tomato sauce on the pizza bases. I spread tomato sauce on a lot of pizza bases. When I saw it in the oven it smelt good and it looked delicious.  Some toppings were cheese, onion, mushroom and silverbeet. I am excited to taste it!  By Kayla

Today we made the dip which looked delicious. I love the kitchen garden so much! By Naomi

Today I made anzac biscuits. It smelt good and my favourite thing about making them was mixing them.  Alita

My helper was Naomi’s mum and Nikki Sensei. We were making vegemite scrolls. At the beginning we talked about knife rules. Then  we had to cook the meal. We started off slow but then we sped up. It looked yummy and tasted good too.  By Bailey

I am in the eggplant group and we made a vegemite scroll. The thing that I enjoyed the most is getting my hands covered with vegemite. The sad thing was that today is the second last Stephanie Alexander lesson.

Today I made the salad. I cut some corn. The corn was easy to cut.

All we made is Anzac biscuits, vegetarian pizza, dip and salad. By Anesh

Today we made bread and for bread we made anzac biscuits . We added oats, golden syrup and more! I worked with Lachlan, Alex, Natalia, Lucas and Alita. Today I made sweet corn salad and my mum came to help me. The main meal is pizza and for dessert it is ANZAC biscuits.  It was so fun but today was the last lesson. I couldn't wait to eat.  By Zayden

Today in SAKGP my group made cheesy vegemite scrolls.   It was super fun and we learnt a lot too.  We learnt how to make the scrolls. It was fun getting to make it and it was smelling yummy too.  I am really excited to eat them and get to eat all of the other delicious things in our lunch.   It wasn’t hard to make. All we had to do was make the mix, knead it, put the vegemite on it , spread the vegemite out, put the cheese on, spread the cheese out, roll it up, cut it and put it in the oven. I know it sounds like a lot but it wasn’t. Please make it at home. It is VERY yummy and easy to make. So go on, make it at home. Enjoy the yumminess with your family.  By Ayla
