Year 7 & 8 Basketball

The Year 7 and 8 boys and girls travelled to Traralgon to compete in the Wellington basketball event. It was a fantastic couple of days with students displaying teamwork, determination, and a high level of ball skills. Every player gave their best, supported their teammates and showed great sportsmanship on and off the court,
It was wonderful to see the teams work together, communicate, encourage one another, and never give up, no matter the challenge.
Maffra SC had great numbers in Year 7 girls and were able to take two teams. The girls played against some very strong teams but never dropped their heads and showed great resilience. Jailyn Pratt, Lahni Bellion, Harper Parsons, and Mia Smith were key ball handlers, while Georgia Robinson, Darcy Adams, Lara Ratten and Ruby Cassidy had great pressure in defence. Briley Hitchcliffe, Harper Cann were main ball handlers in second team, Charlotte Daly had tight defence and used her speed well up the court. Amelia Hornby, Jacinta Schoenmaeker and Jazmine Virag were great support helping the ball move down the court. Well done girls.
The Year 8 girls hit the court with no subs on the bench. Kelsey Hasler, Kirah Heron, Zara McKinnon, Kasey Duncan and Evie Dierickx stood up to the challenge and battled away all day. They did not secure a win but showed tremendous determination and resilience. What stood out most was the mateship and teamwork within the group. The girls supported, encouraged and back each other, I am very proud of the girls.
The Year 7 boys came up against a strong Catholic College Team, it took a while for both teams to score with the high defensive pressure. Keonta Taiapa-Tama hit the scoreboard first, Wyatt Gieschen, Carter Robinson, Kodi Winter, Logan Jensen and Brock Hensgen also contributed to score throughout the game. Very proud of the boys never giving up and continue to push opposition til the final siren. Next the boys had a win against Traralgon College 34 to 10. All boys contributed to score board, and Wyatt Jones and Kaiden Armstead also took the court helping boys in victory. In the third and finally game, the boys were up at halftime by 4 points against Lavalla, Lavalla stepped up in second half to secure win. Well done to the boys on a great.
The Year 8 boys had a tough game first against overall winners Catholic College. Logan Powell started the game off by hitting a big 3 point which sent alarm through opposition. Hudson Buckley and Kodi Ratten also hit the scoreboard. Miles Phillips and Kryton Taiapa Tama brought the ball down the court, Mason McLernon had strong defence, but Lachie Marshall overall ran the plays and was the key player for the day, with strong rebounds and driving force to the ring. In the second match up, the boys had a win over Traralgon College 29 to 22. This time Hudson Buckley started the scoreboard with a 3 pointer, Lachie Marshall and Kryton Taiapa Tama also hit 3 pointers during this match, keeping the team ahead. Kryton was main scoring putting 13 points on the board. For the final game Maffra had another victory over Yarram, 47-10. All boys contributed to scoreboard. The boys showcased great teamwork and supported each other, running hard and backing each other up for rebounds. Congratulations on a great day of basketball.
Overall, I am extremely proud of all junior teams and look forward to watching their growth over future events.
