What's happening around our school...

Prep

In Mathematics we have been talking about location and our soft toys came to school to help us learn. We hid our teddies and gave instructions for a partner to find them. We also worked on our understanding of capacity and mass, filled-up containers and gave reasons for why one object may be heavier or lighter than another.

In Literacy, we have been making the most of the sunshine and sitting outside and listening to what sounds we can hear. We heard lots of birds singing and this was our dictation sentence. We are also learning how to spell common words - look how clever we are!

Grades 1 & 2

In Maths we have been busy estimating and measuring using things we have in the classroom such as counters, unifix blocks, MAB and dominos. We have learnt that we need to use uniform units to measure, and that we need to be very careful and precise to make sure our measurements are accurate!

Grades 3 & 4

The Year 3/4s have loved Science Week this week!

They explored Chemical Science, investigating topics such as oil spills and creating homemade sherbet. The students were fascinated by mixing the different chemicals and, of course, by getting to eat their creations! They also explored Physical Science through making scribble bots, learning how movement and energy work together. In addition, they studied Biological Science, looking at microorganisms and discovering just how many germs can be found on their hands. Finally, they investigated Earth and Space, learning all about the phases of the Moon. They used Moon boxes to observe and recorded the different moon phases.

We have continued reading The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, which the students are absolutely loving!

Grades 5 & 6

Term 4 Week 5

In Literacy, our Grade 6 students have been working on a very special writing project - crafting their personal blurbs that will appear in the 2025 Graduation Book.

They took time to reflect on their years at Kalinda, recalling favourite moments, cherished memories, and what they will miss most about primary school. With this milestone task complete, all 5/6 students have now turned their attention back to persuasive writing, drafting letters aimed at inspiring stronger action to protect our environment.

In Maths, students have been exploring the world of 2D shapes, including how they can be transformed and how symmetry plays a role in design. We've also been working with decimals and integers—comparing, ordering, and placing them on number lines. Students are deepening their understanding by applying rounding strategies and building confidence in working with these important concepts.

And in our Geography unit, students have been researching a city of their choice; exploring the ways humans and the environment, shape and impact places.

Next, we’ll be turning our attention to how the environment influences human activity, diving into topics like extreme weather and natural disasters such as floods and bushfires. Students will explore how communities prepare for these events and stay safe.

STEM and PERFORMING ARTS

Combining our STEM week celebrations and their usual Performing Arts lessons, students looked at how AI and different coding applications can be used to compose and arrange music, and had a go at writing and playing their own songs.
