Speaking and Listening
Students will be involved in oral presentations during Show and Share sessions to the whole class. They will be encouraged to communicate clearly, listen to others when taking part in conversations and take turns when responding in pairs, groups or class discussions. As part of our Inquiry on animals the students will be incorporating and sharing their knowledge of their chosen animal and present their animal habitat with the whole class. Students will ask questions and provide feedback to each other.
Writing
We will be focusing on punctuation such as full stops and capital letters and using them correctly in a sentence. Students will be encouraged to focus on leaving spaces between words and rereading their work to make sure it makes sense. Students will be introduced to adjectives to describe attributes of different animals and be encouraged to use them in their writing.
Our writing genres will include recounts and creating short texts to explore, and record ideas and events. Students will be involved in written retells of stories and improvising on texts.
Students will continue to be involved in formal handwriting sessions to practise and consolidate correct formation of letters when writing by using the correct entry and exit points. They will continue to practice placing letters correctly on the dotted thirds.
Reading
Students will continue to be involved in guided reading sessions where they will be given explicit instruction and support to further develop and consolidate strategies to assist them in decoding and comprehension. They will continue to develop a variety of reading strategies and apply their increasing phonemic knowledge and skills in decoding to help them read new words. We will also be concentrating on fluency, paying attention to punctuation and self - correcting when reading.
Our text focus this term is non-fiction books and understanding their features. Students will be developing skills to use factual texts to find relevant information on topics. They will identify key details and discuss the main ideas.
Work on letter blends and digraphs will continue to be implemented in class activities daily and we are now moving towards learning about suffixes such as 'ed' and 'ing.' Students will also be exposed to syllables and rhyming words.
