Mathematics Games Days
The 2023 Statewide Mathematics Games Days were held over the last week, hosted by various schools and supported by The Mathematical Association of Victoria.
These events are an opportunity for students, from a diverse range of schools, to get together and participate in problem solving and mathematical activities in a fun setting and further develop their talents and thinking skills.
The following students represented our school:
Year 7 Maths Games Day (Overnewton Anglican College, Keilor)
Reuben Bland (Stewart House), Max Bourazikas (Andrew House), Oscar Doyle (Stewart House), Ned Hutchinson (Everard House), Elliot Lowdin (Everard House), Sarah Raftery (Stewart House), Jean-Louis Van Der Merwe (Stewart House), and Ian Zhou (Rutter House).
Year 8 Maths Games Day (Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, Keilor East)
Emily Clarke (Everard House), Jasper Geddes (Andrew House), Hudson Green (Everard House), Callista Hasseldine (Andrew House), Charlotte Lau (Everard House), Artemis Nees (Stewart House), Dylan Pang (Rutter House) and Gwyn Van Der Kamp (Stewart House).

At each event, our students were divided into two independent teams of four, and engaged in various individual and team-based activities that required them to solve puzzles and mathematical problems. The overall feedback from our students was that it was a very enjoyable and challenging experience.
This is what some of our students had to say about their experience:
“The Maths games day my friends and I participated in was an exceptional opportunity to meet new people, work as a team, have fun and learn new things! I am very grateful that this amazing event is open to high schoolers like myself. I had a blast and absolutely loved the welcoming atmosphere that was created by the hosts during the day!”
“Our time at Overnewton Anglican College was thrilling, and we had a great time solving many different maths problems. Running around, versing other schools and working together was a good experience, and it was seriously something to remember.”
“We went to the statewide Maths Games Day at Trinity Grammar in Kew. We had a lot of fun, played various Maths activities and interacted with other students.”
“The Year 10 Maths Games Day went really well! It was a great opportunity for us to engage with math in a fun and interactive way. The environment was competitive, which is something that you don't see with maths that often. Overall, it was a successful and enjoyable event that helped reinforce our math skills but also allowed us to work together as a team.”
A big thank-you to our students for their fantastic effort, wonderful attitude and great level of enthusiasm in representing Eltham High School, and also to our staff Kayla Bertoncini, Michael McDonald, Neil Robinson, Darren Squires and Adriana Zorzan for their involvement and support at these events.
