Exploring with Clay

What a fantastic start to the term the students have had!

After seeing the wonderful clay projects the senior students have made with the clay, Foundation, Grade 1 and 2 were eager to get their hands dirty too, and that they did!

In the first week, the students explored different types of clay, Raku, Terracotta and Paper clay. They discovered that Raku clay was quite ‘bumpy’ as it has tiny little stones in it and is great for texture, conversely the paper clay was very ‘smooth’ and ‘soft’, and the red/brown terracotta clay would be perfect for sculpting a waffle cone with chocolate ice-cream!.

This week they have been learning some clay techniques which they will be using on their clay projects soon. The students all had a go at rolling a ball of clay, making coils or ‘snakes’, sculpting and pinching the clay, smoothing the clay with water, using skewers to make marks and patterns in the clay and learning the joining techniques of the 4’S. (Score, Slip, Stick, Smooth).

Finally, the Grade 5 and 6 students finished painting their clay aliens and took them home this week.

Just a few of the many, many wonderful clay aliens have been chosen to be displayed in the library so come and check them out for yourself!
