Unit LB's Reading Goals

Lian Beveridge

LB Reads 800 Books

LB read 800 books in Term 3 and this is what happened. . . we started with working out how many books each kid reads per week, added it all together and timesed it by how many weeks were in the term. We chose a number that was a bit bigger than that.

Lian painstakingly made a long strip of paper with 800 little sections. LB recorded what we read by colouring in one section per book. Along the way we felt happy, amazed, and determined. We started in week 2 and we ended in the second last week of term. We were nervous we weren’t going to make it in time!

We motivated ourselves by doing reading logs and got gold stars if we read at home. To get more into reading we choose one person per fortnight to recommend books that they liked. Also we wrote all our names on the whiteboard and what books we were reading. Every time we reached another hundred books we would have surprise guests come in and read us a story, such as Hannah, Keir and Linden (Lian’s toddler). To show off to other classes we displayed how many books we’d read and coloured in a big book poster that’s outside our classroom.

To celebrate completing our goal we had a class party! We made big table forts out of blankets and squishmellows and we ate lots of lollies. We got a certificate, a bookmark and a fancy rubber each.

We chose to do the 800 book goal to motivate us to read more books because books are amazing!
