Numeracy

Over the last few weeks, teams have been busy planning for Term 4 and all the wonderful concepts they will cover, some old and some new!

In Foundation, students will be learning all about mass. In Foundation, students will be learning about how heavy or light something is.

You might like to talk about mass at home to help support your child’s understanding of mass. Here are some activities you might like to try with your child.

  • Have a look in your pantry cupboard. What are two things that are heavy? What are two things that are light? One thing I like to do is think about how much my daughter weighed when she was a baby, and compare that to our household items - what did she weigh the same as? What was she heavier than? What was she lighter than?

  • You might want to Google animals that are heavy and animals that are light. What is the heaviest animal you could find? What is the lightest animal you could find?

In the Juniors, students will be learning about money! A great topic to cover with lots of hands-on activities you can do at home if you wish. Lots of students (and adults!)  are so used to buying things online or using a bank card, that often they don’t get to see coins and notes! Some things you might want to do at home are:

  • Set up a shop at home and use some real coins or notes to buy things. Juniors don’t yet look at change, so you might want to start with identifying coins, making amounts using coins (for example, how could you make $1?) If your child is ready, you might want to talk about change with them.

  • Look over some catalogues to see what different items cost. You might ask them to pick out three things they want to buy and see if they can work out the cost and then make that amount with coins and notes.

  • A few weeks ago, I put ‘win at the fair’ in the newsletter. This is a great game to play to explore money. Here is a link to the win at the fair board and a video of how to play

These are just some suggestions to try if you’d like to incorporate the skills your child is learning at school into their home life.
