Year 8 and 9 Student leaders participate in the Hack–A–Thon event
By Vaahin Naik, Micah Gonsalves and Benjamin Han
On Tuesday 25 November, eleven of our student leaders proudly represented Box Hill High School at the Whitehorse City Council Hack-A-Thon— a full-day event where young people work together to improve youth services in our local community.
Student leaders were grouped from different schools and challenged to identify a real issue faced by young people today, then competed in group presentations. One of our teams focused on the lack of employment education and essential life skills. This team proposed practical ideas to help young people feel more prepared, confident and capable for the future. Their thoughtful work earned them second place - a fantastic achievement!
Another Box Hill High School team explored how to make Youth Services more accessible for all young people. Their presentation included an engaging role-play, suggestions to make the council’s website more youth-friendly, and a creative group finale using music and team gestures. Their polished and energetic delivery impressed the judges and won them first place!
The Hack-A-Thon was an inspiring experience. It encouraged our students to think creatively, collaborate closely, and develop their leadership skills. We are incredibly grateful for the support from the Youth Connexions team throughout the day. All participating students felt honoured to take part in the event. This event empowers young people by listening to our voices, and it also gives us the chance to shape the future of youth services in Whitehorse.
