Senior Arts Celebration

Mr James Taylor, Arts Domain Leader

Finishing on a High Note

Celebrating the achievements of our senior arts students.

VCE provides our students with the opportunity to really extend their knowledge and understanding. For VCE arts subjects, this is applicable to the creation of some kind of product, be that an artwork or performance.

Successfully completing VCE is a major achievement in itself, regardless of grades. To successfully complete a VCE arts subject (AM&E, VCE, Media, Drama or Music) means learning terms and concepts, practising skills and managing time to work through a process resulting in a final product. In the case of Drama and Music, this product needs to be delivered to an audience in real time. Having taken Year 12 Music myself, I know first-hand what it is like.

For some of our senior arts students, they are able to go way above and beyond anything they have done up until now. This is the amazing and, at times, daunting nature of arts subjects. There always seems to be another level of creative expression waiting to be unlocked, limited only by time. Again, we are impressed with what our arts students are able to achieve in the limited time available to them, all while balancing other VCE subjects and the rest of their busy daily lives.

I would also like to acknowledge the incredible efforts of our junior and middle school arts teachers. The work they do with our Years 7 to 10 students is the foundation that our senior students are able to build on.

So, as we celebrate the achievements of our senior arts students, we need to recognise that it is a team effort. The students with their teachers, and the love, support and encouragement of their friends and family.

It is only fitting that our students have the opportunity to share their results with the school community. It seems wrong for a student to spend months practising for a performance or producing an artwork only to be seen by one teacher or assessor. This is why, in week 1 of this term, the back of the hall was once again turned into an exhibition space. This time, it was for our Year 12 AME and VCD students to display their wonderful work to the school community. I love being able to stand back and see the results of the countless hours of making. I also love to bring my junior and middle school classes along to be inspired. Around the same time, screens of media products were made in the Hall, attended by many enthusiastic students. Our Music and Drama students also had opportunities to present their performances to an audience.

On behalf of our Year 12 VCE arts students, I would like to once again thank our hard-working Year 12 teachers, Ms Lockhart, Mr Davies, Mr Wilkins, Ms Longden and Mr Thomas.

Finally, we wish all our graduating Year 12 arts students every success in their future artistic endeavours.
