Inspiring Science Educator Honoured with Prime Minister’s Prize

Glen Innes High School teacher Mr Matt Dodds has been recognised nationally for his outstanding contribution to science education, receiving the Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools as part of the 2025 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science.

This prestigious award celebrates teachers who demonstrate excellence in delivering science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education across Australia.

Mr Dodds, who teaches Physics and Biology, is well known for his passion and innovative approach to engaging students in STEM. He is dedicated to inspiring young people from a variety of backgrounds, particularly those from rural and low-socio economic communities, to explore and pursue science-based pathways.

Bringing science to life through real-world applications, Mr Dodds encourages curiosity and creativity in his students. One of his most notable achievements is the creation of the Astronomy and Astrophysics Depth Study Program, a two-day event held annually at Siding Spring Observatory in Coonabarabran. Now in its seventh year, the program has provided more than 280 regional students with an immersive, hands-on learning experience that deepens their understanding of the universe.

Through his dedication, Mr Dodds has helped to increase female participation in Physics at Glen Innes High School and inspired many students to continue their studies in STEM fields after graduation. He also supports teachers across the country by sharing engaging and practical classroom resources that ignite a love of learning in science.

Glen Innes High School proudly congratulates Mr Matt Dodds on this outstanding national recognition. His passion, creativity, and commitment to excellence continue to inspire students and educators alike.
