Welcome back to our final term of learning for 2023.
With glorious spring weather, I do hope Pittwater House families have taken the opportunity to rest and refresh in readiness for what will, no doubt, be a hectic few weeks.
Whilst we have enjoyed these times, the world this past week has seen a level of evil barbarity few could imagine, particularly when children, women, and the elderly have been the target of abject cruelty. I can only hope that the highly disturbing content regarding Israel and Gaza, that may be circulating on social media is being carefully managed by you and your family. I encourage you to make yourselves aware of eSafety’s guidance www.esafety.gov.au/report/illegal-harmful-content and report content where appropriate.
We have been shaken to the core and the resultant level of fear and anxiety is deeply unsettling. We must stand united in support of communities that have been affected. It is a time for empathy, compassion, and respect. The vilification witnessed in Sydney last week has no place in our country.
We begin this new term with a new Student Leadership team, the Class of 2024. My letter to you all at the end of last term shared the delight we have for the group who will be front and centre of so many activities and opportunities for our students. Each member of the Class of 2024 wears a simple badge xii, signifying their role in our School. Their collective opportunity to lead by example is complemented by the portfolios chosen by the Prefect team, led by Nicolas and Sienna. I have great expectations for this cohort to build on the superb work of the Class of 2023, led superbly by Levi and Bridget, whose legacy will be a wonderful base upon which our new student leaders will build.
The Induction Assembly held on Tuesday was a fitting way to commence the Term. Having family members sharing the journey is important. And for Nic and Sienna having their alumni siblings present was particularly special.

Students have returned to the school building works significantly changed from the end of last term. Despite the inevitable delays, and challenges, we are hopeful of a handover later in the term. At least now, the students can see the impact these wide balconies will have on daily amenity.
Our final term is a busy one. Not only will students complete key assessment tasks, but they will be aware of foundational work for new stages and subjects selected for 2024. HEROIC learning requires all students to focus and ensure their daily approach to their learning takes account of our School Motto, Semper Diligens, always hardworking. It must remind us of our purpose.
Never forget that education has the power to transform lives. In all elements of schooling at Pittwater House, our School must be a force for good in the world. Thus, beyond the classroom, our need for family and community must be strong in our thoughts and actions. So, whilst there are wicked challenges before us, as a school we need to prepare our students for a bright future, aware of potential and not weighed down and burdened by that which daily feeds our inbox. It is by committing to causes beyond us that we are more likely to see light, rather than darkness. I urge our School family to look outwards from Collaroy. How can we in these final weeks of our academic year positively impact those in need? Let us reject the omnipresent focus on individualism. In this vein, I was delighted to hear of the great work of our Community Heroes, a committed group of students from Years 9, 10 and 11 who, in each of the holiday breaks this year, have given time to interact with residents from the War Vets. Not only were cakes baked, and Trivia worked up, but these fine young people chatted and engaged meaningfully with a group of our senior citizens; mutually, their lives have benefitted. Our cadets too, continue to give service to the wider community. A large contingent spent the first week of the break on camp, honing their skills and working in team, superbly. My congratulations, and thanks to each of these students and the wonderful staff who ensure these activities thrive at Pittwater House. The cadets, led by Pittwater House staff, Mr Blackwell, Mrs Thomas and Ms Carpenter, and the Community Heroes by Ms Brady; your work is appreciated by us all.
Whilst mentioning the Spring Recess, a group of 26 French students ventured to New Caledonia to further their linguistic skills. Time was spent in formal classes and then enacted in their group activities. As many of these students are about to commence their HSC studies of French, this was particularly beneficial. Again, my thanks to the three staff who accompanied the group, led by Ms Marion. Please see the article in the 'Languages Faculty' section of this edition of HouseNews.
It is a term too of year level camps, beginning with the Year 6 Canberra trip this week. Given the momentous times we are witnessing, I am sure the students will have additional stories to share on their return.
Therefore, as we set sail for these final few weeks, I wish you all well, and I look forward to engaging with you at the various opportunities for further community building through the Term.
