At Roxburgh Homestead Primary school we support children to interact with literacy in innovative ways as a pathway to more traditional print literacies. Our multiliteracy tools do not replace books, or the skills of reading and writing. It in fact strengthens the skills of being critical, creative, and reflective thinkers who are able to research, communicate and evaluate messages and ideas. During remote learning a few parents were worried about writing. While handwriting wasn’t the focus, it may have dropped a little. The students typing skills and speed however increased dramatically. Also, their stories and writing pieces have been amazing!!
Our students come across thousands of pieces of information through books, media, and the online environment. It is more important than ever before that we teach our children the difference between fact, fiction, opinion, and bias so that they can evaluate all texts (print and electronic)
Not only do they need to be able to read, but they also need to be able to analyse and sort the information to be able to use it for a purpose. Our school is in the forefront of this work. We do not teach computers. we use computers, interactive whiteboards, video, books, internet as the tools to work with evaluating and creating communication.
Parent supervision is even more important now.
Please supervise at home and know who the circle of online friends are, let your children know that you will check their contacts and chat. Also let them know the way to deal with any inappropriate behaviour online. For example, if someone is rude swearing or bullying online in a game like Fortnight, your child should tell you, block communication from that person and report them to the game organisers.
What should not happen, is the argument or incident be brought to school and continue to cause problems.
Our first instinct is to stop online activity. While a short-term ban is appropriate for mistakes made, we are better off teaching and talking to our children about how to deal with this issue. It’s good to talk to children and help them understand that their belief in themselves is more important than what other people think.
Our staff are constantly updating their skills in innovative online learning a well as the appropriate way to behave and stay safe. I am sure you will be hearing more from your students as they explore these exciting learning opportunities.
