Year 8 Slam Poetry Workshop

On Wednesday 22 November, the Year 8 cohort of 2024 were immersed in a Slam Poetry workshop by Luka Lesson to complement their current English studies of the genre. Students will be studying Luka’s text The Future Ancients in the newly developed ‘Slam Poetry’ unit in Year 8 English, which will form part of the assessment for this unit. 

Luka uses poetry and rap writing workshops as a form of activism. For the past 15 years, he has helped young people to articulate and perform their work in education centres worldwide, amplifying countless marginalised voices in the process. Luka's poems and rap verses are being studied as part of official school curriculums throughout Australia, and unofficially by educators worldwide.

In this workshop, Luka discussed his process in writing Slam Poetry, gave students pointers on how to write similar pieces, and answered students' questions regarding his text, his career and the creative process.
