10C Work Experience Reflections

For work experience, we went to Rosemont Stud half an hour out of Geelong. This is a very famous breeding stable in Australia where quite a lot of racehorses have been bred. We had 9-hour days, starting at 7 am and finishing at around 4 pm, making us get up at 5:30 am and have left the house by 6:30 am to arrive on time. I started by helping around with the yearlings (one and two-year-old horses) where I helped clean out the stalls, fill up the hay nets, and put more shavings in the boxes for the first two days. I worked for the last three days with a woman named Katelyn, she was in charge of the mare and foal area of the stable. Every day I had a schedule but it was always different working with horses. I would rate the whole experience a 5, I would recommend it if you like horses and want to see the vetting experience. The days were pretty repetitive so if you enjoy that then it I would recommend it.

On the 23rd to the 27th of October I got to spend the whole week working in Allied Health at Swan Hill District Hospital. During the week I experienced and explored different fields of Alllied Health everyday including OT, physio, community services, dietetics, podiatry and exercise physiology. At the Community Rehabilitation Centre (CRC) I got to work with a variety of clients with an OT, physio and an exercise physiologist. During my time at the CRC, I participated in multiple rehab groups working with all abilities trying to regain strength and fitness. At the Neighbourhood House I participated in both the Mens Shed and a craft group. In both these groups I spent most of my time helping the elderly while also socialising with them during group activities. Podiatry wasn’t my favourite but it was still nice to be exposed to another field in Allied Health. Lastly in dietetics I spent my time with a dietician in the Acute Ward of the hospital. Together we managed all the patients' certain diets and made sure they were getting enough protein and energy. The many benefits from this experience included developing new skills, socialising with different ages and abilities, learning if it's a future job prospect, and being exposed to different opportunities that I would have never seen before this placement. The placement did help determine whether or not this is a possible career path in my life. I think I most likely will go down a health field career especially after learning more about it last week. Ultimately I feel this experience has been extremely beneficial and has helped a lot in terms of skill building and future job prospects. I definitely recommend experiencing some sort of work placement at a younger age to explore a variety of different options.

On Monday the 23rd of October, instead of going to school, I headed down to St Mary’s Primary School to start my week of work experience. During the week I learned about teaching and the everyday life of being a primary school teacher. I worked with teachers and students from grades Foundation to Year 6 and helped teach and support many children. I really enjoyed helping out at the school and felt that I gained a lot of knowledge as well as benefits from taking part in this. There are many skills involved in teaching and as the week went on I built upon many of my own skills and developed a lot of new ones as well.

On the 23rd of October, I began my week's work placement at St Mary’s Primary School. I really enjoyed working at St Mary's Primary School and getting to experience what it's like being a primary school teacher. The opportunity to work with all different types of age groups really helped me decide what kinds of age groups I would enjoy working with. I liked the aspect of being able to ask questions and understand the roles of the teachers and how they got to the point of being a teacher in the first place. The placement helped me understand more about the role of a teacher and has definitely helped me know if I would like to do this in the future.

I had the great experience of going to GMG and Logan & Hall for my work experience week. My time at both places was an experience that I am grateful for. I had the chance to work with everyone in Logan & Hall they were all so nice and helpful. During my time at GMG, I was able to work with a lot of different people and get to know what everyone does at GMG. It was an amazing opportunity and I am definitely thinking of accounting in the future.

Industry Visits

On Wednesday 10B  went for a walk down to Youth Inc. where we were greeted by some friendly faces that made everyone feel welcome and the students got to enjoy the safe space after our presentation.

Will and Bec both gave an insight not only into how they can support students but also told the students about their very interesting pathway journey.
