Over the next month, our Prep students are embarking on an exciting journey around the world in their Humanities classes! They will explore all seven continents, discovering fascinating animals, iconic landmarks, and intriguing fun facts about each one. Of course, to begin with, we need our passports! Get ready for a whirlwind tour of our amazing planet.
This week, we had the pleasure of having Mr. Anatoli from Craft Power for an engaging workshop with many of our Year 1 students. Our current Science focus for this term centres around the concept of Simple Machines. It was an absolute delight to witness our students thoroughly enjoying themselves as they constructed their own wooden cars. We are exceptionally proud of our students for their attentive listening and their impressive ability to follow the instructions to create these remarkable cars!
Our Year 2 students thoroughly enjoyed their in-visit with Mark Wilson linked to our English Unit: Author Studies. Mark has a passion for helping animals to live long and happy lives on this planet. He delivers these messages through the books that he writes, including Journey of the Sea Turtle, Migaloo: The White Whale and Animals. To support our students to retain the information he shared, he took them through a directed drawing of a Loggerhead Sea Turtle and Humpback Whale. Mark was very impressed with the amount of knowledge our students knew about native animals and animals that live all over the world. We look forward to writing stories inspired by Mark's love of animals and expressing important messages through writing.
Year 3 had a great time participating in House Sports Day this week. We were so proud of the students transferring their learning around collaboration into the team games. They displayed sportsmanship and celebrated the success of others, even those in other house groups. We are excited for our upcoming Basketball Gala Day where students will be able to demonstrate these skills when competing against other schools.
As part of our humanities unit on rivers in Australia and around the world, the Year 4's set out on an exciting cruise along Melbourne’s iconic Yarra River! Over an hour, we glided along the water, surrounded by scenic views and the rich history of one of Australia's most well-known waterways. During our trip, we observed how rivers serve as hubs of activity and resources. We saw people enjoying the riverfront with barbecues, picnics, and bike rides. Along the way, we also spotted several rubbish trappers—structures designed to collect and prevent litter from entering the river and flowing out to sea. This adventure was more than just fun; it deepened the students' understanding of a river's role in society, from providing water to supporting leisure and gathering spaces for communities.
Many Year 5 students at South Melbourne Primary School had a great time during the Maps and Mayhem event. They were excited as they took part in fun activities that helped them think carefully and work together. The students explored maps, solved puzzles, and found clues to complete each challenge, just like the characters in The Girl of Ink and Stars, our class novel. They used what they had learned in both Geography and English, drawing connections between the maps in the story and real-life maps. The event was an exciting experience that helped them learn more about maps and how they are used in real life.
Year 6 students have spent time in Term 3 and 4 mastering their writing of persuasive texts. Students first wrote a persuasive text on why plastic should be banned. Next, they wrote a second text on whether or not all Year 7 students should have a phone. Finally, students planned and wrote a persuasive text on a topic of their choice. Check out some examples below. You might just be persuaded!
