Visual Arts Term 4

Welcome back to Term 4!

I hope everyone had a restful break and is ready for an exciting term in the art studio. This term, we’ll be focusing on preparations for our Art Show on December 5th, where every student will have a chance to showcase their creative work. It’s always a highlight of the year, and we’d love for parents and family members to join us by contributing an artwork of their own for display! Let’s make it a vibrant celebration of the creative talents of our school community.

Here’s what each year group will be working on this term:

Prep

Our youngest artists have really grown into confident creators! They’re becoming more independent in the art studio, and this term, we’ll be exploring and developing key skills in painting, collage, drawing, and sculpture. These skills will help them create special pieces for the Art Show. The Preps will be focusing on bringing all their newfound knowledge together to produce work that expresses their individuality and creativity.

We’ll spend time experimenting with different materials and techniques, encouraging the students to use their imaginations and explore what’s possible with art. From creating fun and expressive collages to colourful paintings and 3D sculptures, the Preps will be putting their heart into everything they make. It’s so rewarding to see them grow as artists and develop confidence in their abilities!

Grade 1-2

This term in Grades 1 and 2, we’re diving into reflection as an important part of the creative process. We’ll be asking questions like What do I like about my art? What could I improve? Why did I make these choices? These reflections will help students learn how to evaluate their own work and understand their creative decisions on a deeper level. They’ll also be learning how to explain these decisions to others—a key skill as they prepare for the Art Show.

In addition to reflecting on their own work, students will learn how to help their classmates improve by offering constructive feedback. They’ll develop confidence not only in creating art but also in discussing it, explaining their thought processes, and supporting their peers in doing the same. This critical reflection will help them refine their pieces for the Art Show, making sure that their work truly represents their best efforts.

Grade 3 - 4

For Grade 3 and 4 students, reflection and improvement will be a big focus this term. They’ll be encouraged to dive deeper into their work, asking themselves questions like What works well in my art? What changes would make it even better? This reflective process will help them make more informed artistic decisions and gain confidence in discussing their creative choices.

As we prepare for the Art Show, students will also practice explaining the thinking behind their work—whether it’s a choice of colour, composition, or subject matter. This deeper understanding of their artistic decisions will allow them to take more ownership of their art. Additionally, we’ll emphasise peer feedback, teaching students how to give and receive constructive criticism. The goal is to foster a supportive environment where students can learn from each other and improve together. By the end of the term, each student will have a refined, well-thought-out piece/s ready for display at the Art Show.

Grade 5 - 6

Our senior students are stepping up their art reflection skills this term. In Grade 5 and 6, we’ll be focusing on critical thinking and evaluation as students ask more complex questions about their artwork. They’ll be reflecting on aspects like What message does my art convey? What techniques can I use to make my work more effective? What do I like or dislike about the choices I’ve made? These questions will help them refine their work as they prepare for the Art Show.

In addition to reflecting on their own work, Grade 5 and 6 students will play a key role in helping their classmates improve. They’ll be learning how to give thoughtful, constructive feedback that supports their peers in pushing their artwork further. By practicing both self-evaluation and peer review, students will develop a well-rounded understanding of the artistic process and learn to approach their work with a critical yet supportive mindset.

As we gear up for the Art Show, students will be focusing on finishing and perfecting their pieces, making sure they’re ready to showcase their talents. It’s all about reflecting on what they’ve created, making improvements, and confidently explaining the decisions behind their work.

We’re looking forward to seeing the amazing artworks come to life in preparation for the Art Show on December 5th. It’s going to be a fantastic celebration of creativity and learning across all year levels!
