Prep Spotlight

School life for Prep is in full swing! We are excited to share that our Prep students are making fantastic progress, settling into the routines and expectations for learning and building friendships amongst their peers.

Over the last 7 weeks, we have been diving into the world of letters and sounds through the Little Learners Love Literacy phonics program. So far, we have met some fun characters to help us understand the sounds connected with the letters: M, S, A, F, P, and T. These sounds are the building blocks of early literacy, and understanding them helps our students recognise words, begin to write, and develop strong reading skills.

Here’s what we’re working on:

M"Mmmm" like in "Milo Monkey" or "moon": Students are learning to make the "m" sound and associate it with words like "mice" and "man." They are also practicing writing the letter “M” and identifying it in books.

S"Ssss" like in "Sally Snake" or "sock": We’re helping students connect the “s” sound with words like “snake” and “sand.” Writing the letter “S” is part of the fun, as students practice both uppercase and lowercase forms!

A"Aaa" like in "Ally Alligator" or "ant": This letter is the foundation for many words! Students are practicing saying and writing “A,” and they are exploring words like “airplane” and “apple.”

F"Fff" like in "Felix Frog" or "fan": We’re learning how to produce the "f" sound, and students are beginning to recognise and write the letter “F” in their names, books, and more!

P"Ppp" like in "Peter Penguin" or "pencil": The letter “P” is a favorite, and our students are making progress in saying and writing it. They’re exploring words like "parrot" and certainly enjoyed eating "popcorn" to reinforce their learning.

T"Ttt" like in "Tim Turtle" or "table": Students are making connections between the “t” sound and words they already know, while practicing writing both uppercase and lowercase “T.”

Fun Activities to Try at Home!

  • Sound Hunt: Go on a scavenger hunt around your home or backyard and look for objects that start with the letters M, S, A, F, P, and T. Can you find a "pencil," "teddy bear," or "apple"?
  • Letter Art: Use playdough, sand, or even a pencil to practice writing each letter. The more fun we make it, the better they’ll remember!
  • Sing Songs: Try singing alphabet songs that emphasize these letters. This can be a fun and effective way to reinforce sounds!

We are so proud of how our Prep students are progressing. With your support at home, they’ll continue to build a strong foundation for reading and writing. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our letter journey!

Warmly,

Miss Gleeson and Miss Reynolds
