Weeks 8 & 9

NAPLAN Success!

The biggest event in Year 5 over the last fortnight has been NAPLAN. All Year 5 teachers and the wider Hillsmeade community are incredibly proud of all Year 5 students for their hard work in preparing, supporting, and encouraging each other. NAPLAN is a wonderful opportunity for students to show their personal growth and development and to challenge themselves. For that, they are all successful, irrespective of the outcomes.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we are continuing to strengthen and build on our knowledge of place value, with a focus on rounding. Rounding is a skill students will use throughout their lives, whether they are shopping, using a budget, comparing sport scores, or working out travel times. Here are some ways you can support your child's learning at home:

  • Shopping: Ask your child to round prices to the nearest dollar.
  • Budgeting: Have them round expenses to the nearest ten dollars.
  • Sport Scores: Encourage them to round scores to the nearest ten.
  • Travel Times: Get them to round travel times to the nearest five minutes.

English

In English, we have been developing our ability to write to the best of our ability under timed conditions. This skill requires students to have a solid understanding of the purpose of the text, structure, and language features. To achieve this, students have been learning to plan, draft, and edit their writing effectively.

Reading

In reading, we have been developing our comprehension strategies, including skimming, previewing, making predictions, questioning, visualising, summarising, and connecting to prior knowledge with a variety of short texts.

Upcoming Learning

  • Mathematics: Renaming 3-digit and 4-digit numbers to explore different place values.
  • English: Analysing, using, and punctuating dialogue in narratives.
  • SEL (Social and Emotional Learning): Strengthening our skills in positive self-talk.
  • Inquiry: Survivor Day activities.

Survivor Day!

This special event focuses on teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and conflict resolution, as students work together in teams to complete various challenges. As part of their preparations, students will also collaborate to create a team costume. Most teams will be designing their own team t-shirts, usually by drawing on a plain white t-shirt. Your child may ask you to supply them with one in the coming weeks—these can be purchased affordably from Kmart or Best & Less.

Reminders

  • Survivor Day: Please supply your child with a plain white t-shirt in the coming weeks—these can be purchased affordably from Kmart or Best & Less.
  • Homework: Encourage your child to read for 15 minutes, three times per week, and record it in their diaries.
  • Personal Care: As students' bodies are changing, we encourage families to talk to their child about deodorant. We understand that it can be a confronting conversation, but it is important for students’ personal hygiene and comfort.

At assembly, our Well-Being Ambassadors were announced. Congratulations to all, and we know you will do a wonderful job contributing to our school community.
