PERFORMING ARTS

Well, we had a great time over the last few weeks making quite a racket with the Boomwhackers! Boomwhackers are plastic tubes of various sizes which depending on their size play a a musical note when they hit a knee or a foot. (They don’t hurt!) In small groups they can not only create a rhythm with the tubes but also a short melody line. When repeated that becomes a melody loop.

Students worked on keeping rhythm, writing and playing melodies and presenting their work to their classmates. We had all sorts of music ringing through the music room. Noisy but fun.

This week we have begun drama activities beginning with improvisation games.

Meanwhile meetings have begun as we work towards the school production in October. A list of characters have been posted in the 5/6 rooms and students have been scrutinising the details before auditions in Term 2.

VISUAL ARTS

Foundation: Foundation students have been busy designing their line and shape robots! Over the past few weeks, they explored different lines and shapes, practising how these can be used to create unique artworks. Their colourful robots are now complete and showcase their understanding of how simple elements come together to form creative characters.

Grade 1/2: Our Grade 1/2 students are in the middle of creating Indigenous-inspired artworks. After looking closely at the work of artist Rosemary Petyarre, they’ve learned how plants and leaves are often used in Indigenous culture for art and medicine. Students are now applying these ideas to their pieces, creating beautiful patterns and shapes inspired by nature.

Grade 3/4: Grades 3/4 have been exploring the world of graffiti and street art. They discussed and debated the differences and similarities between the two, questioning if both forms can be considered ‘art.’ Instead of spray cans, students created vibrant artwork using paint pens and mixed media, celebrating the creativity found in street art. They also recently finished their Gelli prints, experimenting with layering colours and textures to create stunning botanical pieces.

Grade 5/6: Grade 5/6 students are putting the finishing touches on their weaving projects. They’ve worked hard learning this new skill and are now carefully removing their weavings from the looms and adding final details. The best part is—students can even take their looms home to continue weaving wherever they like!
