Year 5: Leadership Incursion

Sulari Nielsen, Year 5 Teacher

The “Lead It” incursion was an incredible experience that truly unveiled the art of leadership to our students, with personable facilitators who engaged our Year 5 students with their humour, stories and insights. Through a series of interactive games and activities, they learned what it takes to be an effective leader, regardless of their role within our DCC school community.

The program kicked off with a Leadership Exploration, where students delved into the traits of great leaders, reflecting on their own leadership potential. It was eye-opening for many, as they discovered strengths and abilities they hadn’t realised they had.

The next phase emphasized Team Collaboration. Students worked together in various group activities, honing essential skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. There was much laughter and excitement as students worked to develop their skills in leading one another. These exercises not only built stronger peer connections but also highlighted the importance of collaboration in leadership.

Inspiring and engaging, the “Lead It” incursion empowered students to lead with confidence and purpose, equipping them with the skills needed to take on leadership roles and contribute positively to our DCC community.

Year 3: Camp

Bryce Morgan, Year 3 Team Leader

On Thursday last week, a very excited cohort of Year 3 students headed off for their first ever overnight school camp! The buses were buzzing with chatter as the children looked over their activity groups and cabin groups.

Thankfully, the sun shone brightly as we pulled into Mill Valley Ranch, and we could spend our first day exploring the beautiful surroundings. The students spent their time horse riding, cooking damper over fires, completing scavenger hunts, and having a great time making new friends. The rain held off until dinner time, and after a fun movie night, everyone went to bed, and many even went right to sleep.

The next day saw some rain that changed our plans, but the children were flexible and gracious. After a very enjoyable worship service with some golden oldie songs like 'Father Abraham, ' the bus ride home was quite quiet, and there was a lot of good and much-needed rest.

We would like to deeply thank our parent helpers for their amazing work. The Year 3 teachers are all very proud of how our students embraced this challenge and made new friends.

Prep: Botanical Gardens

Helen Reid, Prep Team Leader

On Wednesday the preps excitedly headed off to the Royal Botanic Gardens as part of our Inquiry unit, “How Does Your Garden Grow”. While the bus trip provides just as much excitement as the actual event, the day proved a success as students saw trees over 100 years old, touched and smelled a number of herbs or flowers.

Each student potted a plant and made some beautiful potpourri. They saw flying foxes sleeping in the tops of trees and learned about the importance of bees and other insects to the life of the gardens. We climbed on the branches of trees which had fallen to the ground and learned about the creatures that are using those branches as their home.

After lunch it was fun to run around in wide open spaces and enjoy the sunshine. It was a great way to learn about plants and appreciate the beauty of God’s creation.
