Fantastic 3/4

Term 4 Week 6 2024

What have we been up to?

We are well into Term 4 now and there is lots going on as well as lots to look forward to! Last week we had grandparents/ special persons day, it was lovely to see so many attend and the students engaging in activities showing how much their special person means to them.

In Reading, students delved into the origins of the suffix ‘able’ and ‘ible’ and continued to visit the library, where they engaged with a growing variety of literature. They’ve also been focusing on improving their reading comprehension by working with short passages and answering both literal and inferential questions about the texts. Book Club has continued and the students are thoroughly enjoying their texts and gaining new understanding for the author's purpose.

In Writing, students have started exploring persuasive texts, focusing on how authors use evidence and reasoning to support their viewpoints. We've been reading Everything You Know About Dinosaurs Is Wrong and Everything You Know About Sharks Is Wrong. These engaging books dive into common misconceptions about dinosaurs and sharks, challenging readers' assumptions with facts and clear arguments. The students have loved reading these books and have enjoyed creating their own misconception posters to apply what they've learned.

In Maths, students are currently learning about probability and exploring how likely different everyday events are to occur. They are practising how to describe events and order them based on their chances of happening. They are also identifying situations where one event prevents another from happening, such as choosing one item over another. Additionally, students are learning to recognise events that are independent, where the occurrence of one event does not impact the likelihood of the other happening. In the coming weeks our maths session will be based on revising what we have learnt throughout the year.

This term in science, students will learn about different types of forces, including electrostatics and magnetism, and explore their properties. They will investigate the relationship between force and the speed of an object, as well as how friction affects moving objects. The curriculum also integrates the perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, examining forces in traditional sports and games. Additionally, students will explore the forces involved in actions like throwing, dropping, bouncing, and rolling, gaining a broader understanding of physical sciences.

Homework has started again for the term! Each Monday students will now receive a sheet, which will include reading comprehension as well as a maths activity sheet. This will be due the following Monday. If students have not completed it they will be given the chance to receive help during a 15 minute homework club during recess time that day.
