What's happening in Year 3/4 space?
Hello, Grade 3/4 families!
What a fantastic couple of weeks we've had! Last week, we cheered on our amazing swimmers at the school swimming carnival—congratulations to Malachy for an outstanding effort! It was so much fun seeing everyone show their spirit and determination.
This week, we had a wonderful time at our Welcome Night, where we got to connect with families and celebrate the start of the year. Thank you to everyone who joined in to make it such a special evening!
This term in Literacy, we have been diving into the wonderful world of Matilda, a classic book by Roald Dahl! The story is filled with amazing characters, surprising events, and lots of new words that have sparked interesting discussions and curiosity in our class.
Our vocabulary lessons focus on understanding the meaning of these words and using them in different ways. Students have been practicing by creating their own sentences with new words. We’re learning that when we understand new words, it helps us to enjoy the story even more.
In Maths this term, we’ve been playing with numbers. We’ve been working on understanding place value and improving our addition and subtraction skills. Place value helps us see the value of each digit in a number, which is key to understanding how numbers work, especially when they get bigger.
We’ve also been reviewing basic addition and subtraction facts, like adding and subtracting small numbers quickly. But here’s the exciting part – we’re using these basic facts to work with larger numbers! By understanding the value of digits, like the tens, hundreds, and thousands, we can add and subtract bigger numbers with confidence.
For example, if we know that 7 + 8 = 15, we can use that fact to help us solve 70 + 80 = 150, and so on.
