Secondary

Dear Families

The beginning of the year brings valuable opportunities for community connection, and this week, we enjoyed numerous events to welcome the new year, celebrate the achievements of 2024 and set a positive tone for the year ahead. We thank Fr Mark for leading us in prayer and reflection at Tuesday’s whole College Opening Mass, and we welcomed our Year 7 students into the community later in the day at our Secondary Assembly. This was also an occasion of celebration in welcoming our most recent graduates and their families back to acknowledge the outstanding academic achievements of the Class of 2024.

Our annual Secondary Parent Information Evening took place Tuesday evening in a format that provided parents with a wide variety of presentations through the evening to attend. It was wonderful to reconnect with parents and we hope those attending found the evening informative. Assistant Deputy Principal Presentations are available via SEQTA Year Level categories, and all other presentations can be accessed via the General Secondary category.

At yesterday’s High Achievers’ Breakfast, we congratulated students in Years 8 to 12 for their effort and commitment to their studies last semester. Students were provided with some valuable words of wisdom from 2019 Alumni, Rory Hewson, who is currently studying Juris Doctor at the University of Western Australia. Congratulations to the following High Achievers:

Uniform

The uniform is a symbol of membership to the College community and assists students in developing a sense of unity and belonging as well as pride in their presentation. Students are expected to uphold a high standard of uniform and grooming at all times and adhere to the Secondary Uniform Code. Whilst it has been wonderful to see most students wearing the correct jewellery items, short skirts are problematic (the hem should be at the top of the knee), and I ask that parents purchase a correct-fitting skirt if required. We appreciate parents’ support in helping us to maintain a high standard of presentation when in uniform.

Mobile Phones

Unless for extenuating circumstances, students do not need to use their mobiles through the school day and phones must be kept securely in locked lockers between 8:30am and 3:10pm. Students needing to contact parents during the day are welcome to use a phone in the Student Wellbeing Centre. Students using their phones without teacher permission between 8:30am and 3:10pm will have their phone confiscated. Please note that canteen purchases can be made using cash or debit card.

High Achievers’ Breakfast: Inspiring Success Through Good Habits

On Thursday morning, over 120 students attended the High Achievers’ Breakfast in the Thomas More Exhibition Centre. This event was an opportunity to celebrate all high achieving students from Semester 2 2024.

The morning was a great success, and students heard from a John XXIII alumni, Rory Hewson, who shared valuable insights on developing good habits for long-term success.

Rory emphasised that success is not simply about talent but about consistent effort and discipline. One of the key points highlighted was the importance of maintaining strong study habits—planning revision schedules, reviewing notes regularly, and ensuring work is proofread before submission. Proofreading, he noted, helps in refining ideas and avoiding careless mistakes, ultimately leading to higher-quality work.

Discipline was another crucial aspect discussed. Whether in academics, sports, or personal goals, staying committed to one’s routine and responsibilities builds resilience and character. Rory also encouraged students to take risks, reminding them that stepping out of their comfort zones leads to growth and new opportunities.

Another essential habit mentioned was seeking feedback. Rory urged students to embrace constructive criticism as a tool for improvement. He stressed that self-reflection plays a vital role in personal and academic development, allowing individuals to recognise their strengths and areas for growth.

Beyond academics, the importance of daily exercise was also highlighted. Physical wellbeing directly impacts mental sharpness and productivity, making regular movement a crucial habit for success.

The High Achievers Assembly left students motivated and equipped with practical strategies to develop good habits, paving the way for a bright future. All students must be congratulated on their successes this year and continue to acknowledge and celebrate each other on their academic achievements.

GRIP Leadership Conference

Student Leaders from Years 8 to 10 participated in an inspiring conference at Perth Convention Centre on Thursday. The focus was on leadership, responsibility, and creating a positive school environment. The event was packed with engaging sessions, practical workshops, and opportunities to share ideas with fellow leaders from other schools in Western Australia.

The day began with 'Making our school a great place for others,' a session emphasising that leadership is about serving others rather than seeking privileges. Using a student-friendly version of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, students explored ways to support their peers’ wellbeing. Schools shared successful initiatives through videos and discussions, sparking fresh ideas for improvement.

During Break 1, leaders had the option to attend a Time Management Tips session, offering strategies to balance responsibilities and avoid burnout—an essential skill for busy student leaders.

In Session 2, students examined 'The Responsibilities of a Student Leader,' identifying three key duties: shaping school culture, representing all students, and using their strengths to help others. Leaders then chose between two electives: 'Creating school events that everybody can connect to' focused on making school events more inclusive and engaging, while 'Creative ideas for your school that aren’t events' provided alternative ways to make a meaningful impact beyond event planning.

After Break 2, the afternoon continued with a second round of electives. 'Being a leader who supports others' encouraged students to focus on the people around them, offering practical ways to support peers. Meanwhile, 'Tackling something at our school that feels impossible' explored strategies for overcoming challenges and making lasting improvements to the school community.

This conference reinforced that leadership is about action, not just a title. Through collaboration and creative thinking, student leaders left equipped with new ideas and strategies to make their schools a better place for everyone.

Traffic Safety

John XXIII College strives to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our students and the wider community. We would like to address some important reminders about the school pick-up process and associated traffic hazards.

  • Please use the designated pick-up zones only. These areas are monitored by school staff to ensure the safe and orderly collection of students and the continuous flow of traffic.
  • Please observe council parking regulations. Avoid parking in no parking zones, including on the footpath or kerb on Mooro Drive/John XXIII Avenue. This helps maintain a smooth flow of traffic and ensures emergency vehicles can access the school if needed.
  • Encourage your children to use crosswalks and follow the instructions of the crossing guards. It is crucial for their safety that they do not run across the street or between parked cars.
  • We understand that pick-up times can be busy and sometimes stressful. Please remain patient and courteous to other drivers and pedestrians. A little patience goes a long way in ensuring everyone's safety.

In the meantime, the College is working with the City of Nedlands to request that a sign be erected that will prohibit cars from turning right when exiting the loop on school days between 3:00pm and 3:45pm. The City of Nedlands are aware of the traffic management issues around the College and will be monitoring the situation going forward.

We appreciate your attention to these important matters and your continued support in keeping our school community safe.

SPORT

Interhouse Swimming Carnival

The Sr Mary Murray Cup Swimming Carnival was an unforgettable event. Every student who participated in both the official swimming events and the novelty activities deserves applause for their efforts. The atmosphere buzzed with energy, and the students had much to be proud of in terms of their support for each other.

The high level of participation was impressive and showcased the deep-seated passion for sports within our school community. This collective enthusiasm only amplified the day's excitement, making it even more memorable.

A standout moment was the cheering from all Houses. Our Year 12 House Captains, strongly backed by the other Year 12 students, led the cheering and support efforts from start to finish. The roar from the stands during the final relay races was truly electrifying. The strong sporting spirit among our students added an extra layer of excitement to the day. The scoring for the coveted Spirit Award was highly competitive; points were awarded for novelty races, stand decorations, cheering, substitutions, and efficient marshalling. Congratulations to Loreto House, the 2025 Spirit Award winner.

The competitive races were closely contested, and the quality of performances was outstanding. It was especially heartening to see the determination and excitement in the eyes of our Year 7 students, who participated enthusiastically in every race. Mrs Veronica Brennan-Poland and Mr Glenn Mitchell did an exceptional job as poolside announcers, further enhancing the overall atmosphere.

Congratulations to Loyola House who are back on the winners table in 2025, smashing the field by almost 500 points.

Year group Champions and Runner-Up Champions will be announced at the next Secondary Assembly on 20 March.

NAS Swimming

On Thursday 6 March, students will attend classes during Period 1 and then proceed directly to the St Louis Sports Centre after that period to prepare for the NAS Swimming Meet at Newman College. This event presents an excellent opportunity for all Years 7 to 10 students selected to compete, as it will help secure their positions in our ACC A-Division Swimming Team. The meet will feature participants from all NAS schools, including Sacred Heart, Newman, Chisholm, and Servite College, creating a competitive atmosphere. Please note that interschool jumpers will not be available for purchase until the final ACC team has been announced.
