Tutor Groups

Ms Joanne Kirby | Assistant Principal - New Ambitions and Innovation

We are excited to introduce Tutor Groups as part of our Flexible Mondays in Semester 1. These sessions, held during Home Room time, will focus on developing students’ Executive Functioning Skills. Essential tools for managing tasks effectively and building strong social connections.

What Are Executive Functioning Skills?

Executive Functioning refers to the mental processes that help us plan, organise, manage time, problem solve, and be adaptable. These skills are important for success in both academic and personal life.

Some key skills include:

  • Planning and Organising
  • Managing Time
  • Problem-Solving
  • Task Initiation (getting started on work)
  • Flexibility

Research shows that students with underdeveloped Executive Functioning Skills often struggle with organisation, prioritisation, and managing stress, which can lead to feelings of overwhelm and challenging behaviours. While we are not born with Executive Functioning Skills, they can be taught, strengthened, and continue developing into early adulthood.

How Will Tutor Groups Work?

Our students in Years 7-9 will participate in Home Room Tutor Groups on Flexible Mondays. These sessions will provide practical tasks and strategies to help them build their executive functioning skills, hoping to reduce barriers to successful learning.

Why Are We Doing This?

There is a strong link between executive functioning, wellbeing, and academic performance. By giving students dedicated time to strengthen these skills, we are equipping them with tools to navigate school life with clarity, leading to improved focus, a reduction in stress and success in the classroom and beyond.

We look forward to seeing the positive impact Tutor Groups will have on our students!
