SPORT- Mrs Burt

The PE department is looking forward to another energetic and action packed year. Once again there will be many fun sporting activities on offer for the students as well as their normal PE classes.
Many of the programs and activities benefit and rely on parental support and assistance. We appreciate and encourage parent helpers for many of the programs. Up and coming programs in Term 1, where parental assistance will be greatly appreciated include the Year 6 Interschool Sports and school Swim Team.
PE CLASSES
During Term 1 students in Years 3 – 6 will be developing their athletic skills – discus, shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump and sprints. Whilst the Year 1 and 2 students will be participating in activities designed to develop the fundamental motor skills – throwing, catching, ball bounce, kicking, leaping, striking and dodging.
It is important for students to come to PE classes appropriately attired and prepared for physical activity. We ask that parents/guardians ensure that their child:
- Wears runners for PE –this is or safety reasons and to ensure that the surface of the gym floor is not damaged.
- Has their hat – most PE classes will be outside during Term 1.
- Brings a water bottle for hydration
Notes: Parents are asked to write a note for their child when they are unable to participate in PE classes.
YEAR 6 WATER SAFETY
The Year 6 students started their Water Safety Aqua Package last week. They participated in a number of activities designed to improve their knowledge and skills related to water safety - what to do if a boat capsizes, the importance of a PFD (Personal Floatation Device) and what to do, safe entries into water, retrieving objects, rescues and releases, improving swimming technique for freestyle and survival strokes.
This week they had a wonderful time and extremely valuable educational experience at Mills Beach. The students participated in activities that enabled them to implement and expand on the water safety skills they learnt in the pool sessions.
In addition to this, the program provided students with challenges, team building skills, co-operation, tube rescues, life skills and experiences which the students will be able to ‘draw’ upon to complete integrated classwork.
Carnival Day was yesterday. Competing for their House, students participated in 5 different activities – Wading relays, Nipper Board relays, PFD relays, Sprint/Relays and Flags.
