Fay Named Junior Ambassador at Fred Hollows Humanity Awards

“I believe the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other.” – Fred Hollows

Congratulations to Fay Rendell (Year 6) who has just been named WA's Junior Ambassador for The Fred Hollows Humanity Awards 2023.

The Fred Hollows Humanity Award is a highly prestigious award that recognises Year 6 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by making a positive difference in their community. It celebrates students who show compassion, integrity and kindness in their everyday lives, just as Fred did. Since its inception in 2012, the Award has recognised 2,000 Year 6 students from across the nation. Each year the Foundation selects one outstanding nominee from each state and territory to become a Junior Ambassador for The Foundation.

Fay was awarded at a ceremony held at Government House Sydney, hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales.

Fay was nominated by her teacher Miss Jessica Johnston after witnessing Fay’s compassion, integrity and kindness in her daily interactions and selfless actions. A testament to her humanitarian spirit is the annual ‘Give a Can, Give a Dam’ initiative, entirely organised by Fay. Not content with running the initiative solely at the Junior School, Fay has expanded her efforts this year to facilitate the fundraiser in the Senior School.

Fay also actively participates in Church activities, including weekly readings and the organisation of morning teas, demonstrating her commitment to community service. In her academic pursuits, Fay has distinguished herself as a thoughtful and proactive citizen. Her recent inquiry into the signage at the Wadjemup Aboriginal burial ground culminated in a call to action and she sent an email to the Rottnest Island Authority requesting greater respect and acknowledgement of the grounds, highlighting her profound empathy and proactive approach.

Fay has also recently conducted an inquiry into neurodiversity awareness in schools, which culminated in an engaging presentation to Year 4 students about the importance of embracing neurodiversity.

Fay was also interviewed on ABC Radio this week. You can listen to Fay's interview HERE from 2.40.

Year 5/6 Basketball Team Secures the Trophy at the School Sport Western Australia Champions Cup

We are thrilled to share that our Year 5/6 Basketball team recently emerged victorious at the School Sport Western Australia Champions Cup Grand Final. It was a highly contested match against Riverton Primary School, but our boys managed to come out on top, solidifying their spot as the best Year 5/6 team in the state. Adding to this outstanding achievement, our team maintained an unblemished record throughout the entire tournament!

The journey to this achievement began at the Lakeside School Slam series on 16 October, where our team earned their place in the championship. The series brought together top-tier teams from across the state, with over three hundred schools competing for a place in the Champions Cup.

The students on the team were:

Prasham Bista (Year 6)

Samuel Lau (Year 5)

Tych McSwain (Year 6)

Zachary Ong (Year 6)

Amon Orlando (Year 6)

Benjamin Pooley (Year 6)

Zaim Ryroth (Year 6)

This achievement is testament not only to the dedication and teamwork of our young athletes but also to the invaluable contribution of their coach, Mr Russ Haxby. Russ has selflessly devoted his time to training the players, instilling in them not only the technical aspects of the game but also the importance of sportsmanship, discipline, and perseverance.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the parents who attended and supported our young athletes during the tournament. We look forward to witnessing more triumphs and successes from our talented students in the future.

Alicia Reynolds Dominating the Sports World

The College would like to shine the spotlight on talented Year 10 student and rising sports star Alicia Reynolds.

Alicia has represented All Saints’ College in swimming, cross country and athletics. She also represented ASC at the All Schools Triathlon and may have the chance to participate in the All Schools National Triathlon competition in March next year.

Alicia was selected for the WA U15 Underwater Hockey team which won Gold at the National Competition in July 2022, and represented WA again in January 2023. She was selected for the Auscycling WA team for the Junior Road and Track Cycling National Championships, racing in Queensland in April 2023.

She won the Auscycling WA state title U17 Time Trial, also in April, and Cyclocross in July. Alicia then won the Auscycling National Cyclocross U17 Title and was runner-up in the National U17 Cyclocross race in Ballarat in August. She is the current U17 Victorian State women’s champion in Cyclocross.

Alicia was selected to be a part of the WA Junior Cycling Academy, which has a minimum weekly commitment to 12 hours of training. Impressively, Alicia won the academy’s award for winning more races and being on the podium of more events than any other WA junior cyclist in 2023.

It's clear that Alicia has established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of sport. Her consistently outstanding performances are testament to her hard work, dedication and commitment to continuous improvement. We are extremely proud of Alicia’s accomplishments, and we look forward to her continued success.

ASC Students Excel in Freeze Frame Opera’s Production The Little Prince

Congratulations to ASC Students Camille Alonso (Year 6), Alaia Torralbo Straton (Year 7) and Ariel Lu (Year 5) for their incredible performances in Freeze Frame Opera’s production of The Little Prince – A Magical Opera by Rachel Portman at UWA’s Octagon Theatre.

Over the three nights of the show, Camille radiated brilliance in the lead role of The Little Prince. She was joined on stage by Alaia and Ariel, who showcased their exceptional musical talents as part of the WAYV Choir ensemble.

Their participation in this professional production was a unique and invaluable experience, offering these talented performers a glimpse into the world of professional opera at a young age.

We congratulate these students on this outstanding achievement and wish them continued success in their artistic pursuits.
