Wonderful Efforts in English

As we approach the end of the year, I want to extend my congratulations to all our students for their commendable efforts in English. Your hard work has truly made a difference. Our team is looking forward to welcoming you back next year for another year of learning, growth, and meaningful engagement in English.

Our Year 7 students showed remarkable dedication until the end, finishing a mini-unit on Folklore and creating wonderful picture books. Their well-planned, drafted, and illustrated books were so impressive that our proud Year 7 teaching team bound them. What a fantastic result of their hard work and creativity! Please see our student reflections and photographs of their work.

Student Reflections

To make my picture book I went through a few stages. I planned on paper, I wrote my draft, I made the front and back cover on Canva, then I drew all the pictures. My favourite part of making our picture books was drawing the pictures. It took a while for me to draw the pictures. I spent a whole English class trying to draw a person! But once I got my ideas in my head it was easy. I got my inspiration from Taylor Swift’s All Too Well (Taylor’s Version) (Ten Minute Version) (From the Vault) short film, where there is a red scarf. In the first stages of planning, I was thinking of giving the girl 13 wishes because Taylor Swift’s favourite number is 13 but I decided against it. Making the picture books was so fun and I think we all enjoyed it.

We started the unit by learning about types of folklore such as fairytales, myths, legends, and fables. We could then decide on one of the types we liked and write a story about it which we then designed a font cover, back cover, and blurb for, and added pictures to the writing, which we sent to our teachers who printed and laminated them for us. I enjoyed producing my book because I found designing a book to be fun and engaging.  I wrote a fable that was about the cliché, ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’.  For my inspiration, I thought about famous fables and wrote my story like I thought the famous fables were written. To start with I began drawing and jotting down all my ideas on a large piece of paper. Secondly, I began writing down all the words in my story. Soon after that, I started drawing all my pictures in an online drawing software called Kleki paint tool. Lastly, I put all the pictures and words together and got the book printed. My favourite part about making this book was drawing the pictures. The reason for this is that I got to be creative and truly experiment with what my brain could think of.  During the making of this book, I had lots of inspiration. Firstly, most of the pictures were inspired by Indigenous Aboriginal rock paintings. And the Snake was inspired by the rainbow serpent picture book. Curtis Smith
