Mazenod College Staff vs Student Cricket Match 2025

On Tuesday 25 November, the Oblate Cricket team played their first game together against the almighty Mazenod staff team, in the annual Staff vs Student Cricket Match. The game was hotly anticipated to be a close contest, with a young student team and a talented staff team both taking to the field. The match was one of tightest contests in recent years, ending in a tie, with both teams on 142 runs after 25 overs. It is the second tie in this game’s history, the last tie being 10 years ago in 2015.

The staff team won the toss and bowled first. Many staff went through the field and rolled the arm over. A major highlight came early in the innings, when College Principal, Mr Harvey, opened the bowling. He only wanted to bowl 1 over but he took a wicket in his first over with a screamer of a catch at point by Mr Migro, so then you couldn’t get the ball out of Mr Harvey’s hands, with his 1 over opening spell, becoming 3 overs long. The students went on to bat well making 142 runs off their 25 overs with 9 wickets down. Hamish S (Year 10) 35 runs and Melan K (Year 11) 28 runs were the pick of the student batters. The staff bowling unit was led by Mr Ellul, 2 wickets for 13 runs off 3 overs and Mr Mason, 1 wicket for 15 runs off his 3 overs.

A target of 142 runs was looked at by the staff as very gettable. Mr Ellul was hitting them well, making a very quick and exciting 26 runs. Staff Captain, Mr Vallis, steadied the ship early, making 21 runs, while Mr Mason made 28 runs through the middle of the innings, with Mr Scarfone making 18 runs to put the Staff in a winning and commanding position at the 20 over mark. To the student’s credit, they fought back with a couple of quick wickets, to tighten the run chase. The staff needed 3 runs to win off the last ball... They only got two, which made the game a tie!

It was an incredible finish to the game which showed both teams' skill and determination to win. Pick of the student bowlers were Captain, Mitchell G, 2 wickets for 4 runs and Melan K, 2 wickets for 18 runs.

It was an amazing and historic game and we are already excited for the 2026 edition.

A big thank you to all involved.

We wish the Oblate Cricket Team all the best on their upcoming Oblate Cricket Tournament next week hosted by Mazenod Victoria.

Captain Mitchell G lost the toss and Mazenod were sent in to bat first. After a couple of early wickets, Hamish S and Melan K settled the innings with a solid partnership, displaying composure under the pressure of some accurate bowling and good fielding from Kent Street. When Melan was dismissed for 10, young gun Lachlan F joined Hamish S at the crease. The pair went on to form an outstanding partnership of 79 runs. Both left-handers played some classy cricket shots, much to the delight of the Mazenod team. Hamish went on to top score with 79 runs, with Lachlan making 33. Samuel A was the other major contributor with the bat, with an innings of great intent and maturity, scoring 39 not out and pushing the total along right to the end of the innings.

At the end of the 50 overs, Mazenod had posted an impressive score of 7 for 224.

The defense of the total was off to a shaky start, with the Kent Street openers batting right through to the drinks break at 15 overs, with 79 runs on the board. Backing up his great batting, Hamish S finally got the breakthrough, claiming the first wicket straight after drinks. We had a much improved second session with Sam A and Alfred B both bowling well, picking up a wicket each and getting the team back in the game.

The Mazenod team threw everything they had at the quality batters from Kent Street with the ball and in the field, but an impressive century by one of the opening batters who finished 103 not out led Kent Street to a victory in the 45th over.

Overall, it was excellent preparation for the Oblate Cricket Team, playing in their second game together. The coaches were very impressed with the batting performance and the overall effort of the bowlers against some quality opposition. Best of luck to the team who are off to Melbourne for the Oblate Cricket Carnival starting on December 8.
