What’s Been Happening in the Art Room – Term 4
It has been a busy creative Term 4 in the Miners Rest PS Art Room! Students from Foundation to Year 6 have been exploring new materials, developing their artistic skills, and producing some wonderful artworks.
Foundation
Foundation students have been learning about spring through art. They created beautiful cherry blossom paintings and paper plate bee artworks that supported fine-motor development. Students are now beginning their weather theme by creating dramatic thunderstorm paintings using colour mixing and collage.
Years 1–2
Students in Years 1 and 2 began the term by painting textured papers and using them to create vibrant spring bird collages, as well as their own imaginative paper collages. They are now moving into a drawing unit where they are creating artworks that tell a personal story. Students are learning how to communicate ideas visually, add meaningful details and consider how their artwork can share information with an audience.
Years 3–4
Years 3 and 4 students created bird bath collages, exploring balance, composition and layered textures through printed papers, collage and painting. They are now planning their carnival mask designs, thinking carefully about shape, colour and decorative features as they prepare for mask-making in the coming weeks.
Years 5–6
Students in Years 5 and 6 began the term with a still life painting project, learning how to add shadows and highlights to create depth.
They are now working on an art project that best reflects their interests. Some students are developing their sculpture skills by creating papier-mâché dog sculptures. Others have chosen to further build their textiles skills, planning and sewing their own hand-stitched felt items. A third group has pursued an interest in drawing, learning about perspective, tone and shading to develop more realistic artworks.
Across all year levels, we have continued to reinforce our whole-school focus on respect in specialist classes — listening, using equipment safely and waiting patiently. It has been wonderful to see students encouraging one another and taking pride in their creative achievements throughout the term.
Donations Needed
The Art Room is currently in need of newspaper donations to support our papier-mâché projects. If you have any spare newspapers at home, we would greatly appreciate them being dropped off at the office or the Art Room. Thank you for your support!
