Last term, Year 5 students explored how music can create atmosphere and tell stories. Drawing inspiration from the novel Holes, they designed original soundscapes in GarageBand to reflect key themes such as hard labour, racism, injustice, friendship, and loneliness. Students experimented with sounds effects such as drones, crunchy chords, atmospheric loops, and percussive effects to evoke mood and emotion. As an extension, they paired their compositions with digital artwork, showcasing how sound and visuals can work together to deepen storytelling. The creativity behind these projects is to be commended. Enjoy some examples below.
Year 5 have also been putting their creative skills to the test by arranging the traditional Ghanaian folk song Sansa Kroma for voices, tuned percussion, and untuned percussion. Students worked collaboratively to layer rhythms and melodies, experimenting with texture and tone colour to bring this vibrant piece to life. Their arrangements showcase not only musical understanding but also cultural appreciation and teamwork. Here are some of their fabulous creations.
Last week, our Junior Beginner Band and Junior Concert Band headed out to Trinity Preschool to entertain their youngest audience yet! Students from each band performed a variety of pieces and even combined forces for several exciting numbers. One highlight of the afternoon was when some of our Year 5 and 6 students gave instrument demonstrations and performed solo items, sparking curiosity and delight among the preschoolers. The lively audience was very appreciative, and it was wonderful to see our musicians sharing their talents with the wider community.

Last week, Junior School students were treated to an early taste of Christmas cheer with a festive performance from our Senior School iBand. Under the direction of Mr Yabsley-Bell, the band entertained a lively audience with seasonal favourites that had everyone singing, dancing and clapping along. A big thank you to our senior students for generously giving up their lunchtime to share their talents and bring a little festive joy to the playground!
