Science News

This year, the science department delivered a new syllabus to Year 7 and 9 students. While this has produced some challenges, it has also offered the opportunity to update the knowledge and skills to current thinking based on data and improved technology. 2026 will see the delivery of the new syllabus to Year 8 and Year 10 students. Of course, the fundamental science has not changed, which means that there must be rigour and discipline for students to concentrate and challenge their thinking. Students need to realise that their learning relies on what has been learnt before. They are continually building their brains and the classroom is the brain gym.
Also in 2026, Mrs Anneka Morrison and Mr Aniket Kulkarni have been asked to be the Leaders of Learning for the Science Department. I wish them well in this endeavour as I move into the Math's department.
We have been truly blessed with our new science laboratory technician. Rachael has a degree in animal science and has worked in animal nutrition and disease management for the past 10 years. She has commenced her Education degree and so is a wonderful source of knowledge and expertise for the science department. Her energy, forward planning and suggestions are inspiring and so easy to work with.
Last week, we had the new Year 7 students for 2026 come to Marian for O Day. The students made sherbert and tested their taste buds with a carrot dipped into their sherbert. When the carrot ran out, their fingers sufficed. Rachael had grown some watercress for the students to take home and nurture until they could harvest them for their Christmas salad. Hopefully they have been successful and will be able to taste the lovely watercress flavour.
Mrs Sithole designed and delivered the final depth study for Year 7. It was an excellent learning experience where students were able to use evaporation to determine the largest quantity of salt in different concentrations of saline solutions. Students did a great job with very impressive results and an excellent way to end their first year in high school science.
I have to thank the teachers that have been my colleagues in the science department this year, for their work in the classroom, their ideas, assistance and help with developing lessons, resources and programs.
We wish you all a very happy and restful Christmas time with family and friends. It is a very special time to sit and talk with the kids and have the opportunity to listen and share some of your wisdom.
May God bless and keep you all safe
Best wishes
Esther Dumbleton (Science Leader of Learning)
