CSIRO STEM Professionals in Schools Program - Yarrabing Secondary College
Yarrabing Secondary College recently had the opportunity to participate in the CSIRO STEM Professionals in Schools program throughout 2025, an initiative designed to connect students with real-world science, technology, engineering, and mathematics experts. This program fosters curiosity, innovation, and a deeper understanding of STEM careers, while working closely with community representatives.
We were thrilled to welcome Graham Downs, a CSIRO-affiliated STEM Radio Frequency professional from Telstra, who worked closely with our Year 7 classes on their crane designs in Semester 1 and the RASCube program in Semester 2. Graham guided students through the principles of design thinking and the importance of defining clear requirements in both engineering and technology projects. His visits helped students see how professional problem-solving and structured design processes are applied in industry, and then in their own designs.
The experience sparked creativity and encouraged students to think critically about their design choices, preparing them for future STEM challenges. A big thank you to CSIRO and Graham Downs for making science and engineering real, relevant, and exciting for our learners.
