BHS Specialist Sport
Term 2 and 3 2024
A large focus of work for 2024 has been our Year 7 and 8 Specialist Sport program in 2024.
Engaging Students in key areas of focus for Health has been a very successful one.
This has also been thanks to the Victorian Institute of Sport. Students were exposed to Elite level facilities, Health and information from Nutritionists who are leaders in their field and a taster to what the build-up of an event, such as the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, means to an athlete.
Students heard from Sports Dieticians on healthy choices and also Taekwondo Medal Contender:Stacey Hymer, and her daily habits when it comes to her “Fuel”.
These information on seminars are vital for equipping our junior athletes with the data they need to make informed decisions about what food and nutrition they are putting into their bodies and ultimately, how it impacts their performance.
This year for our Gymnastics Unit, the Year 7 Specialist Sport Students were treated with an offsite opportunity thanks to the Gymsports Team in Alfredton.
Students were put through their paces using apparatus and movements that some had never faced before. They demonstrated school values and also learned new skills they may not have been exposed to. Well done Year 7’s!
Year 7 athletes were very lucky to have a surprise visit from some big names in the Western Bulldogs AFLW Team.
Isabella Grant, Kris e- Lee- Weston- Turner and Rylie Wilcox all spoke to the students about the change in the AFLW program, and what it means to be an elite level AFLW player, and then took students through their paces with some skills and drills.
This year so far we have had many student athlete success stories from all year levels in Specialist Sport. These have been both representing the school and outside of school in their selected sports.
The achievements are just a few ways that our great student athletes display school values and that... “Impossible is just an opinion”
Poppy is one of our Year 7 elite dancers who has quite the resume already!
These are some shots from the Australian Open where Poppy performed as part of the Centre Court action on the opening day of the Open, which was broadcast via channel 7 and on YouTube
Second event was the AFL Grand Final 2023, Poppy performed on the MCG with KISS as part of a group of 500 kids as pre game entertainment!
As part of the BFNL U/13 Championship Squad, Embly Jenkins competed in the Western District Association on Championship netball tournament, held on Sunday 2nd June at BSEC.
Embly, who played predominantly in Goal Shooter, and her team, were strong competitors throughout the day, making it through to the Grand Final, against Hampden FNL. Despite a fantastic effort, they finished Runners-Up after going down by a goal in the final minute. As a result of their efforts, they will go on to compete at the Association Championship State Finals in Melbourne on 16th June.
In April Mackenzie Hocking auditioned successfully for the Joffrey Ballet School in America and was offered a position in their summer schools for jazz, contemporary and hip hop dance.
This mock magazine cover photo was taken at the Victorian dance festival where she auditioned.
Congratulations to Lachie and Bailey who were both selected to represent the BFL Interleague Team in Warrnambool recently. Well done on your achievements!
