Indonesian News

Shane Merrett

I have been very impressed with the effort and attitude of the students during their Indonesian sessions.  It is always nice to see their smiling faces lining up to come into my classroom and to hear their keenness in wanting to know what we will be learning about that day. I was also very impressed with the student’s willingness to try some fruits from Indonesia.  Most children tried something new and found something that they liked.  Their gratitude was on display for all to see.

Foundation

Our Foundation students have been learning about Jakarta, the Capital City of Indonesia and noticing how different people live in other countries. They are currently learning the words for different animals and some new songs to do with animals.  Soon they will be starting to create their own placemats showing many of the words we have learnt this year.

Year 1

The Year one students have been revising their simple Indonesian numbers and learning how to say more difficult numbers.  We have also been looking at some of the different foods in Indonesia including some of the different tropical fruits.  We have been looking at different market places in Indonesia and will soon be learning all about the amazing Indonesian orangutans.

Year 2

The Year 2 students have been learning about the different types of farms and farming methods in Indonesia to compliment the work they have been doing in their own classrooms.  They learnt about the history and importance of rice and the rice growing cycle.  They will be learning about the Indonesian words for the different classroom objects and how to use them in sentences in the coming weeks.

Year 3

The students in Year 3 have been following an Indonesian family and their children as they grow up in a remote area on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. We have been reading books, looking at photos and watching video of how their lives are different.  Our focus has been looking at differences in their daily routines in comparison to their own growing up around Rowville.

Year 4

The Year 4 students have been working on their greetings, learning new Indonesian games and following instructions in Indonesian. They are now starting to work on their photo presentations to the class to demonstrate their cultural awareness. Later they will be learning about traditional Indonesian stories.

Year 5

The Year 5 students are currently learning about the cultural diversity within the different islands in Indonesia.  The interest and discussions we have been having in class has been fantastic.  We will soon start looking at modern Indonesian History, much of which is centred around the relevance of Indonesian Independence Day on the 17th of August.

Year 6

The Year 6 students have been learning about modern contemporary Indonesian society and following a girl of around their age as she goes about her daily routines.  They are just starting to write a book about their own lives in Indonesian learning about sentence structure, grammar as well as formal and informal language.
