Reading for Meaning

Recently, our staff have been unpacking our Reading instructional model, a component of which is how teachers can use questioning to not only clarify meaning but also support and extend students to comprehend the key details from the text.

Home reading is a wonderful opportunity for parents and families to be involved in this process. This can be simply done by asking questions about what your child is reading.

An effective strategy is to ask your child - "How do you know?". For example  - if you initially ask whether a character in a story is good or bad, you may follow up your initial question with "How do you know?". This encourages students to search for supporting information or inferences within the text as evidence to support their understanding.

Encouraging thinking and dialogue during and after reading is a proven way for students to develop a deeper understanding of the text and make connections between the text and the world around them.
