Sports News

Thursday afternoon sport has commenced for Term 3 with students attending their chosen sport. For students who have chosen a paying sport or require specialised equipment such as golf clubs, it is important that students are prepared for sport each week. If there are any concerns regarding students’ Thursday afternoon sport, please contact Mrs Tilse.
Representative Sport
In Week One of this term, there have been a number of students participating in representative sports. Our Open and 15yrs Rugby League Boys teams travelled to Coffs Harbour to play in the Northern NSW Country Cup. The Open Boys represented St Joseph’s with great determination and we are very proud of their efforts to play in this competition. The 15years boys had a win, loss and draw and were highly competitive on the day. Congratulations on your achievements this year. Thank you to the parents who have provided endless support for Rugby League in many ways.
This week our Years 7/8 and 9/10 Girls Netball teams will play in the Diocesan Netball Championships with our Years 9/10 Boys playing in the inaugural boys competition. They will then all follow-up playing in the NSW Netball Cup Division Championships at Singleton on Friday. In addition, Years 7/8 Boys teams will play in the competition aiming to qualify for the Regional Finals later in the term. Our Open and U16 Girls teams will play in the Northern NSW Country Cup at Port Macquarie next Thursday. We wish all teams well.
During this term other representative sports will include: Diocesan Basketball, Year 7 Soccer, Diocesan Athletics, NSWCCC Netball and NSWCCC Athletics.
We encourage all students to regularly check Compass for all sport events.
Picking up students on Thursdays
If you need to pick up your child/children on Thursdays after 1pm, please advise the Front Office before 1pm by phone 6543 7444 or via email admin@aberdeen.catholic.edu.au , so your son/daughter can attend the non-sport room. With various sports off site, it is sometimes difficult and time consuming trying to locate students being picked up. If students wait in the non-sport room, it is much quicker to locate them and call them to the office for pick-up.

NSW Hunter All Schools Touch Competition
On 24 and 25 July, the St Joseph’s Aberdeen Touch Football Teams went down to Wallsend to play in the Hunter All Schools Touch Competition. Both days had superb weather and were filled with close matches, great spirit and fun. Students represented the school with pride, and it was a please to take them. Here is a summary of the two days:
Wednesday – 7/8 Girls
The St Joseph's girls had a loss against Tomaree High to start the day, but this served as a warm-up as the girls were ready and firing for the rest of the day! This saw nearly every team member score in the following games against San Clemente and Hunter Valley Grammar. This landed them to finish second in their pool and take on Hunter Sports High in the quarterfinal. This was a very tough game against a strong, well-drilled side. The girls put up a fight, tired out the other team and forced errors on the other team but unfortunately, we came away with the loss 0-4.
Wednesday – 7/8 Boys
The St Joseph's boys looked strong from the beginning of the day with convincing wins against Callaghan College, Hunter Valley Grammar and St Pius X. This allowed them to finish first in their pool and they advanced to the quarterfinals against Catherine McCauley. They secured another win during this game and went head-to-head against Hunter Sports High. They played very well against this well-drilled side and stayed strong with their heads up, however, a few unlucky moments saw them with a narrow loss, 7-5.
Thursday – 9/10 Girls
Our St Joseph's girls came out firing against Callaghan College and Rutherford Tech to start the day. We met our match with a draw against St Joseph’s Lochinvar which was a nail biter, then narrowly went down to St Catherine’s Singleton by 1. The teams outstanding for/against points saw the team finish second in the pool. A convincing quarterfinal win against All Saint’s Maitland progressed the team into the semifinal against Hunter Sports High. Another strong performance by HSH that lead to a loss, but our girls team put up a fight, defending well against this side.
Thursday 9/10 Boys
Our St Joseph's boys started the day with a win against All Saints Maitland and a loss against St Catherine’s Singleton as they were learning how to play together. After the hats and zinc cream came on, the boys were recharged and had two strong wins against Hunter River and Brisbane Water. This comeback saw them finish second in the pool and advance to the quarterfinals. Here the boys played Tomaree HS and managed to score against the tough side but went down 4-1.
Thanks to all students and parents for an exciting and fun couple of days at touch football.
