It started with the ‘milk’ conversation on our first week back after the school holidays. Everyone discussed where and what everyone was doing during the holidays. Michelle talked about how she visited her grandmother’s farm, which is a dairy farm located in the southeast of Victoria, next to the Gippslands Giant Worm land. We then enquired about the worms from the website, including checking on the location of the farm on Google Maps.
From there, the ideas kept coming, and we decided to talk about how people in the olden days (a long, long, long time ago) made their butter by churning the milk. We looked at YouTube videos of people churning butter, and it struck our minds that we should try and churn our own butter using modern technology, e.g., a blender or hand mixer.
The following week, the cooking adventure began. Everyone had a go at mixing the butter by shaking the thickened cream in the plastic jar and then with the machine. After making the butter, we decided to make scones, sourcing herbs from our very own herb garden!
We also have made a special surprise for our fathers and carers for their yummy morning tea. Everyone worked really hard to make something very delicious, including cooking in our lessons, we have made it about learning numeracy and literacy.
It's a fun and practical approach to helping our students build functional skills they can bring home to our lovely families.
