Learning in Action

Literacy:This fortnight students delved into a new unit on Poetry. The focus has been on identifying the purpose (making the reader feel emotions),  determining words that rhyme and understanding that images and words go together to create meaning. Students read Giraffes Can’t Dance and Magic Beach. As a class, students co-constructed a poem about a bug and ice-cream.. Through our decoding lessons, students applied known strategies to read words with stage 2 sounds (m d g o c k ck e u r ss f h ) and continued to work on their individual goals.

In Writing, students constructed their own simple sentences ensuring they had a subject (who) and verb group (action).  They accepted the challenge to expand their sentences by adding an adverbial where and adverbial when. For example, In the morning, the boy played soccer on the field. Students enjoyed drawing and writing about their holidays. They learnt the ‘ck’ and ‘ss’ digraphs (2 letters making 1 sound) and applied the spelling rules to write words with these sounds. Students learnt that they use these digraphs after a short vowel sound.

Preview - Next week students will listen to more poetry focusing on visualising. Students will apply learnt stage 2 sounds to write decodable sentences.

Maths: This fortnight the Preps have been introduced to the topic of ordinal numbers, which is the order something comes in e.g races, dates, lists, competitions. Students have learnt to verbalise, identify and write ordinal numbers up to the 10th position. Students have engaged in racing various materials like vehicles, animals, fruits and other objects around a race track, and have identified the object’s ordinal number.

We have revisited our unit of Data and continued learning about graphs. Over the next few weeks, students will start creating and recording their own data.

Preview- Students will start learning about teen numbers and continue graphing data.

Inquiry:We have begun our History unit exploring personal history and the personal history of others. Students shared major events from their lives, and we created a class poster to showcase their knowledge. Following this we played a game called "Guess the Baby," where students tried to match baby photos to their classmates. After the game, we created a display titled "Then and Now." One side featured baby photos, and the other side had current photos of the students. It was a wonderful way for the students to develop their understanding of the past and present.

Preview- Students will learn about timelines and how they can be used to document key life events.

Wellbeing: Prep students engaged in the Respectful Relationships program, focusing on inclusion. We watched a story about a young boy excluding others from his cubby house, leading to a class discussion on how this made the characters feel and the importance of including everyone. We then practised role-playing to learn how to ask others to play and what to do if excluded. These activities are crucial for building respectful and empathetic relationships.

In Friendology students learnt about ‘Friendship Fires’. Students explored how to resolve conflict with a friend and how to respond to hurt feelings and misunderstandings.

Preview- Students will identify and explore the effects of making unkind or unfair decisions.

Curious Corner

Our Curious Corner has reopened with an exciting new makeover for Term 3! This term, our focus is on 'History,' inviting students to delve into the fascinating journey of life cycles. They'll have the chance to discover the different stages of human life, from infancy and childhood through adolescence, adulthood, and into elder years.

The Prep students couldn't wait to dive into the revamped space, eager to explore our new toys and engaging play-based experiences!
