Literacy

We just love reading! We all love our weekly Library visits where we can read with our friends and take home a new book for the week!

In Reading, students will continue to focus on building their literacy skills by practicing reading in various situations such as independently, listening on the iPad and with a partner to build our reading confidence and fluency. This term we will begin exploring fiction and diving into all the elements of a great story such as a character, setting, problems and solutions. We will continue to bring home our readers--3 decodable readers, and 2 PM readers. The decodable readers are for the students to practise their sounds and the PM readers are for you and your child to explore together, build comprehension and discuss the story.

We can't believe how far our Brave Writer's have come! Each day we are astounded by the bravery, creativity and passion our Preps show through their writing!

To compliment our Reading, students have the same focus of fiction to develop and refine their writing skills. During Reading, the students will discover the parts of a story and in Writing they can experiment and apply all their knowledge. Over the term the students will work hard to create their own wonderful story as well as be part of a play to wrap up our unit!

This term, we will continue on with the Sounds-Write program, which is a phonics approach to the teaching of Reading and Writing. We will be teaching students that sounds can be represented by one letter. In addition to the sounds taught last term, this term we will introduce  /x/, /y/,  and double letter sounds like /ll/, /ss/, /zz/ and /ff/. We will be building, spelling and reading words using these sounds. We will also learn to build different VCC, CVCC and CCVC words using vowels and consonants.

We will also continue to learn high frequency words, such as 'because', 'home', 'friends' and 'have'. These are the words that will appear most in their take home reading books. As a class we will put the high frequency words on our class Word Walls. The Word Wall helps our students when                                    they are writing.
