Year 3 Curriculum Newsletter

Reading:

In Reading, this semester students will study the novel ‘Yarra and her Deadly Dog, Demon’- they will cover comprehension strategies such as predicting, inferring, and summarising.

Students will learn to identify the main idea in fiction and nonfiction texts and distinguish the difference between the ‘topic’ and the ‘main idea’. Students will learn to understand the importance of visualising as they read and how it can assist them to comprehend the text.

 

Writing:

In writing, the Grade 3s looked at the following text types through their novel study of ‘Yirra and her Deadly Dog, Demon’:

Persuasive:

They will explore the aspects of persuasive texts, beginning with the text structure, looking into reasoning, exploring modality and persuasive devices. Students will apply their understanding of the structure to craft their own persuasive text.

Poetry:

Students will be learning how to use poetic devices in our writing to create short poems.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students will focus on Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. In Number, we will be exploring Additive Thinking, by looking into adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers. In Measurement, students will be delving into formal and informal units to measure objects. Lastly, in Statistics, we are learning to gather data and produce a range of graphs using both materialistic resources and digital technology. 

 

Wellbeing:

In Wellbeing, we will be continuing The Resilience Project, a program aimed at nurturing resilience in our students. Through interactive activities like discussions, journaling, and mindfulness exercises, students will explore gratitude, empathy, and emotional literacy, they will learn to navigate challenges with courage and optimism. By fostering resilience, we're empowering our students to thrive academically, socially, and personally.

 

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, students will delve into the Earth’s relationship with the Sun and how the Sun, Earth and Moon interact. They will learn that the rotation of the Earth on its axis causes regular changes, including night and day and the pattern of the seasons. Students will also explore how the forces and properties of materials affect the behaviours of a product or system. At the end of the inquiry, students will design and create a marble run with a sequence of steps.

 

Visual Arts

This term students in Year 3 will explore construction, using cardboard to create 3-dimensional face sculptures. They will be inspired by famous artist Pablo Picasso and learn about his artistic style - ‘Cubism’. Students will discuss the materials and techniques used to make their artworks and they will reflect on the process as well as the completed product. They will be working along with a community artist as they create their own original canvas art for our upcoming Art Show. They will work towards being courageous artists who give new techniques a go and they will work safely in the art room. I look forward to exciting times this term in the Visual Arts room.

Performing Arts

In Term Two in Performing Arts, Grade Three students put into practice their work on reading music from the previous term. They are learning to play several songs on the recorder and develop their physical technique, building confidence when they shared with their peers to both give and receive feedback.

 

Physical Education

In Grade 3 PE classes, students continue to develop their fundamental movement skills while exploring more challenging games and sports. They refine their techniques and strategies, focusing on fair play and teamwork. Students continued to refine their skills in different Athletic events whilst having the opportunity to compete in these at Athletics Day. Social skills are emphasised through cooperative play and team sports, fostering empathy and leadership abilities.

 

Japanese 

This term in Japanese, the Grade 3 students are developing their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through the Unit ‘I went to the Zoo’. Students will learn to identify, say and write the Japanese names of a variety of Zoo animals. They will build their speaking and listening skills through learning to answer the question “What did you see?” with “I saw a __.”

 

Students will continue to have opportunities to revise the first alphabet Hiragana. They will also learn about cultural events in Japan such as Ohanami and Children’s Day.
