Monash Tech School – Super IP Industry Immersion Day
On 14th March, a small group of students attended the Super IP program hosted at Philips Ormonde Fitzpatrick, which was an industry immersion about intellectual property law (IP law). We had numerous opportunities to explore the field of Intellectual Property Law, and careers that are associated with it.
First, we got introduced to the different types of IP law, and the countless types that regular businesses and products engage with. We had the opportunity to learn how to write a patent specification, which excitingly included the verbose, attorney-style language and the specific conventions required for a patent application. Despite our struggles to understand all lawyer-lingo, it was a highly rewarding time trying to fulfil the job of a patent attorney!
This was followed by an industry panel session, where we had the chance to ask questions to industry leaders about the daily work of professionals working in this field. The professionals revealed the number of wild unknowns and surprising inventions involved in this career, as well as the pathways students could take in pursuing this route. I'm sure that this has inspired us to consider a career in Intellectual Property Law.
We are perhaps the next generation of patent attorneys! Who knows?
Thank you to Mr Ballagh for taking us on this excursion, and the Pathways team for providing us with this worthy experience.

Model UN Conference
On Wednesday the 20th of March, our team from Year 11 entered the Center for Higher Education Studies (CHES) as representatives of our assigned country Ireland, in a bid to understand the goals of the United Nations, regarding worldwide issues and the promotion of peace within our global society.
A ‘Model UN’ program is essentially a simulation model of the United Nations, which is an assembly of different countries to address issues and changes, and each team representing their country works to implement their desired amendments in the global caucus to better improve our world as a whole. Students who participated were able to learn several skills about professional diplomacy and bravely entered the tumultuous world of international relations to combat issues related to AI globally and within their countries.
Assigned as delegates for Ireland, our team engaged in complex discussions with other Melburnian schools about the prevalence of AI in society, and overall, we learnt so much about the life-changing and crucial decisions that lie in the hands of world leaders. We couldn’t recommend this program more!
