Positive Behaviours for Learning
At SFS, our PBL (Positive behaviours for learning) school wide expectations are:
Respect,
Responsibility and
Kindness
The whole school has a PBL lesson on a Monday at 1pm. This week we have focused on Responsibility outside, think before you act. The children explored different self regulation strategies to help them when they get frustrated outside or have conflicts.
National Walk safely to school day
Walk safely to school day is on Friday 10th May 2024.
The benefits of walking for children can help improve fitness, friendship, their confidence and even help the environment as we reduce transport pollution.
Some helpful tips for you and your children, if you are planning to get involved.
- Make a plan of the route you will take to walk to school;
- As a family, review the pedestrian and road safety rules;
- Ensure you eat a healthy breakfast before you start your walk;
- If you must drive, perhaps you could park the car some distance from the school and walk the rest of the way. Or, if you cannot walk all the way, walk to the bus stop instead; and
- An important reminder to all Parents and Carers, to supervise young children (especially those under 10 years of age) in road environments, car parks and around schools. Remember to hold hands and follow the rules when crossing roads.
We encourage as many children as possible to walk to school or at least part of the way to school on this day. We will have 2 meeting points where we will have a walking school bus lead by some teachers. Parents can either drop their children off at this meeting point and walk to school with the staff or join the staff and walk to school with your children. When we arrive at school we will make our way to the school oval and do a lap of the oval. The two meeting points are:
- The Lynbrook community centre
- Figtree Reserve (corner of Alymer Rd and Waterbrush crescent)
We will meet at these two points at 8am and will be ready to leave by 8.10am.
Let’s get healthy together and walk to school!
Child Safe standards
The Child Safe Standards aim to protect children and young people, by requiring organisations to put policies, procedures and processes in place to prevent and respond to abuse. They aim to make keeping children and young people safe. There are 11 standards.
Standard 4
Organisations tell families and communities about how they keep children safe from abuse and harm. They encourage them to be involved in keeping children safe from abuse and harm.
Your organisation must:
• help families to take part in decisions that affect their child
• tell families and the community about how your organisation keeps children safe from abuse and harm
• make sure families and communities can easily find and understand this information
• make sure families and communities have a say in your organisation’s policies and practices
• tell families, carers, and the community about your organisation and how it works
Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS)
Good mental health means having a positive sense of wellbeing, coping with challenges and being able to realise individual potential.
Developed by paediatricians, educators, psychologists, researchers, and teachers, the Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) program upskills experienced teachers to become Mental Health and Wellbeing Leaders and aims to increase the capacity of Victorian primary schools to support the mental health of their students.
The Victorian government has given all Victorian schools funding to employ an experienced teacher in the role of Mental Health in Primary school’s leader. The school has appointed me in this role and I am happy to take this on.
The role of the MHWL is to build the capability of the whole school about mental health and wellbeing (identification, promotion and prevention), provide support to staff to better identify and support students with mental health needs, establish clear pathways for referral for students requiring assessment and intervention, and monitor and evaluate student progress.
