Learning Centre News...

Learning Centre One

Welcome back to Term 2! The Preps have come back with a spring in their step ready for some serious learning. It has been an exciting time listening to all the holiday adventures and the things done throughout the break, we hope you all had a wonderful time together.

In Literacy, the students revised their phase 2 sounds so that they could get further exposure and remember the sounds that have been explored throughout phonics time in Term 1, before exploring their phase 3 sounds. The students then explored that texts are made up of words and that together they make meaning of the words that have been written. They then explored sentences and how they’re used to express an idea.

While writing the student explored characters in texts, illustrations and real life experiences through the use of ANZAC Day stories. They then looked into verbs being doing words and that they’re used throughout instructions. The students wrote their own instructions on ‘ How to make ANZAC biscuits’ and made their own biscuits to share as a learning group together.

During Math, the students have been learning about location and how they can describe the position of an object using words such as, inside, outside, next to on top etc. The students then explored part whole and how we can make different combinations of a number using materials and make the whole number e.g - 3 and 2 makes 5.

Throughout Religion, the students continued to explore the Easter story and that Easter is a time where we reflect on Jesus’ death and rising. The students then looked at how the women felt after Jesus died and why they felt that way. They then made connections to their own feelings about Jesus and his resurrection.

Learning Centre Two

Welcome back to our LC2 families, we hope you all enjoyed some quality family time together over the Easter break.

SUMMER GALA SPORTS

Last term, our students participated in the Summer Gala sports carnival on a beautiful sunny day in March.

Volleyball

We went to Eagle Stadium with the basketball players on the bus and got ready to play on the indoor courts. There were two volleyball teams and we each played about five games over the day. I was feeling very determined to do my best and it was a tiring day.  Everyone was a bit nervous to begin with but then they started to be more confident and felt calmer over the day. We didn't win but came close and all had a great day.

Nishika

Cricket

We went to Galvin Park with the tennis teams on the bus. While we waited to begin we practised our fielding and then were ready to play our first match. I was very excited and ready for all of the challenges I had to overcome on the day. My team won our first match but lost the other two. The other OLSC team only lost one match and they have made it through to the next round. In the end, it was fun and everyone got to play an equal amount of games.

INQUIRY

Last week, our students participated in a senior Science Day where they were immersed in many science-related activities and experiments organised by the 5/6 teachers. Each class rotated through four areas of science and completed many experiments and science-related activities. A fun day was had by all!

Physics - Scott helped the children investigate circuits and different types of energy.

Chemistry 1 - Krystin and Zach led the students through making chemical reactions of the fizzy kind. Some ended with quite a BANG!

Chemistry 2 - Ben worked through a few experiments that involved reading procedures and watching reactions between bi-carb soda and vinegar, and oil and water.

Space Science - Bianca and Chelsea taught students about stars and constellations. They constructed a constellation cube to light up at home.

Earth Science - Ann and Selena encouraged students to find out more about natural disasters and how they occur on our Earth, through a series of experiments.

5/6 CAMP

On Monday night, we led families through an information session about the up-and-coming senior camp at Sovereign Hill. For those who were unable to join us, here are the slides that were presented online on Monday. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask your child's teacher. Please ensure you have completed the online permission and medical forms on the ICON Parent Portal. If you need help with accessing these, please contact Chrissy on the office phone or via email: czammit@olscwyn.catholic.edu.au

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY

Yesterday, some of our 5/6 students travelled to President's Park to participate in the District Cross Country. As always, our seniors demonstrated great respect towards others and showed immense pride in being able to represent OLSC at this sporting event against other schools in the West.

BUDDIES

This week our year 5 students were very excited to see their buddies. The preps were taught how to use our sports equipment appropriately when playing outside. All preps were eager to have a go at playing different sports through great encouragement from their buddies, especially to have a go and try their best. There were lots of smiles during buddies this week. We can't wait to see our buddies again in the next fortnight.

Learning Centre Three

We welcome all students back to an exciting Term ahead. Thank you to all families for a very smooth transition to Term 2.

During Literacy, we have been learning about Day and Night and the types of things we do during each time of the day. We then read about the ANZACs and why we commemorate ANZAC Day.

Maths has been all about numbers and how we make different numbers up to 100, what is one more and one less and what is 10 more and 10 less.

For Religion, we reviewed the meaning behind Good Friday and Easter and the feelings that the disciples and Mary felt during this time.

For Wellbeing, we have been talking about our feelings.

In Inquiry, we have begun learning about science and how we use our senses to experience things. We made some popcorn and described what we saw, what we smelled, what we heard, what we felt and our favourite... What we tasted!!

Looking forward to an exciting term ahead.

Year 1/2 Team - Gabby, Gillian, Imogen, Janeen, Jamie, Jess, Jordan, Mary, Shalome, Tasmin, Tina and  Sue.

Learning Centre Four

Greetings from LC4. What a busy week and a half we have had.

Literacy:

Over the last fortnight in Literacy, the 3/4 students have been learning about the meaning and significance of ANZAC Day by responding to texts about the First World War and Gallipoli. They examined what they already knew as well as their wonderings about ANZAC Day. Students identified key nouns, verbs and adjectives from the texts to use in writing their own sentences. They looked at images to identify what was happening by imagining what the diggers (soldiers) could see, feel, hear and smell. Students also practised writing using correct sentence structure including subject and verb agreement, independent and dependent clauses, in addition to forming compound sentences using conjunctions. They were able to use these skills in writing about their observations of images.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students explored chance and probability. They learned that everyday events can have different probability of occurring. Students learnt how to predict the likelihood of events occurring, to identify outcomes of everyday events and to explain their reasoning. They conducted chance experiments and recorded the results. Students also demonstrated their understanding of how to represent data in different ways.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, we are learning about the different types of science and the need to use scientific language to explain. Students explored the scientific process that scientists follow including making observations, asking a question, forming a hypothesis, conducting an experiment, analysing data and drawing a conclusion. This culminated in all students participating in an Inquiry Immersion Day where students spent time with each of the 3/4 Teachers and were introduced to different types of science including chemical, physical, and earth and space science.

Religion:

In Religion, we looked at how through the disciples, we are taught to be followers of Jesus. Students reflected on the importance of the Road to Emmaus story to the Easter story. Students were shown two very different artworks featuring different events from the Road to Emmaus story. They looked at the differences between the two art pieces and compared the written text with the images.
