Rowing Report

With the Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta, and the National Regatta (ARC) in Penrith in the rear-view mirror, we reflect on the success that MGC Rowing experienced. This includes;

  • All MGC Crews finishing in C Finals or Higher (HOSG) with 11 x A Finals Total.
  • Multiple Medals across the 3 Squads (HOSG) // 2 x Bronze, 2 x Silver
  • Our First quad rowing in the B-Final at the ARC (Top 16 in the Country)

Congratulations to all our rowers on a fantastic season and thank you for all of the work you have put in throughout the season.

On Friday the 26th of April, members from the Melbourne Girls’ College rowing community gathered for our annual presentation night, proceeded with a ‘boat christening’ ceremony. This event marks the naming of new additions to the MGC Rowing Fleet, with this year featuring 9 new boat names.

Boat naming at MGC functions differently to other clubs, with boat names reflecting members of the MGC Rowing community that have had significant impact on the club, or celebrating past student rowers who have gone on to represent Victoria at state level competitions. The new named boats were:

  • Mansfield Family
  • Harrison Family
  • Cuddy Family III
  • Jones Family

(All families have been significant contributors to the program be it through multiple rowers, parents committee work, dedication to the club or all the above)

  • Andrew Arney (Former acting principal)
  • Cavell Zangalis (MGC’s First Principal)
  • Glen Holland (Facilities Manager, and Club Handyman/Hero)

State Representatives

  • Ellie Brennan (Victorian Women’s Lightweight Quad Scull)
  • Jess Cuddy (Victorian Women’s Masters Eight)

It is also tradition that we award several members of the rowing community with categories to be voted on by peers and coaches at the conclusion of the season. This years award recipients were:

Senior of Season: Sara Lay

Intermediate of the Season: Romy Haller-Trost

Junior of the Season: Alexis McCarthy
