Music Camp

Music Camp

Over the weekend our Orchestra, Rock Bands, and Choirs attended our annual Music Camp at Urban Camp in Parkville. The weekend included many extended rehearsals, (with Orchestra completing the entire score of The Sound of Music in preparation for the school musical in August!), a movie night, a talent quest, and a walk to nearby Lygon Street for gelato! The camp culminated in a celebratory concert for parents on Sunday.

A huge thank you to our parent volunteers Katie Falkiner, Anna Taylor, Phil Lewis and Emily Bowden, our wonderful instrumental staff Andy Clarke, Susan de Jong, and Tony Hicks, and especially to Anne Corry. Thank you to all our 68 students who were able to attend for their dedication to their music studies!

Music Camp Shoutouts

Thank you to our 9 year 12 students who attended their final Music Camp on the weekend, from left to right: Leanne Leong, Adelaide Ahearn, Alia Fritschy-O’Connor, Irene Tetaz, Elita Hemley, Olivia Hall, Eva Harasymiw and Sienna Virtuoso, pictured with our Orchestra leader, Tony Hicks.

Last weekend (26th April to 28th April), the MGC Music Ensembles had a wonderful time at the annual Music Camp, learning songs and having fun! The orchestra had a great weekend, managing to get through all the required pieces for The Sound of Music musical, and performing two of them - How Can Love Survive and Procession in addition to The Awards at the start - and congratulating the nine Year 12s who came along for their last year. We congratulate the orchestra for completing the pieces so quickly.

The choir enjoyed spending the weekend delving into Christina Aguilera, the new Barbie movie and the prominent musical of Wicked. The Acapella Choir was enthusiastic in adding additional harmonies and choreography to these pieces and sectioned off from the choir to learn the Cha Cha Cha version of “Perfidia”, Billie Eilish and Lorde. The amalgamated choir joined to perform these artists with pride at the performance in the afternoon.

Through a combination of the Junior, Mid, and Senior Rock Band, the weekend was spent practising tirelessly and through the collaboration of various year levels. The bands practised “Valerie” by Lana Del Rey, and Scary Pocket’s rendition of “Staying Alive”, featuring Lizzy McAlpine.

We’d love to thank the teachers and parents who took the time out of their weekend to educate, teach and guide our music students, especially music director Anne Corry, who organised the camp.

Music Camp Talent Show

Every year the MGC Music Camp holds a talent show for the music students to showcase their talents, whether it be through hilarious comedy or beautiful music performances. This year we had a whopping 23 performances by the students and we had our wonderful music teachers perform for our opening number and we’re sure that everyone had heaps of fun. Our Year 12s truly had a hard time choosing our best, and we’d love to acknowledge and thank everyone that took the time to perform.

After much consideration, prizes were awarded to:

  • Audrey Ahmed, for the Best Overall Performance
  • Juliette Haslem and Wendy Haythornthwaite, for Best Vocal Duet
  • Iriye Theinschnack, for Best Instrumental
  • Anya Paine and Leo Creaney, for Best Creative
  • Izzy Hall for Best Solo Vocalist
  • Abby England and Kinu Wright, for Best Instrumental Duet

Congratulations to them!
