Rugby League
St Augustine’s Rugby League 15s and First XIII teams are building up to their upcoming season. Our First Rugby League squad faced off against Brothers A-Grade on Thursday evening in an opposed session. Many thanks to Brothers for their ongoing support and for providing us with the valuable opportunity to learn from the back-to-back premiers. Captain and Coach Jordan Biondi Odo takes a hands-on approach to player development at Saints, coaching each Wednesday.
Saints have also entered a B team in the local Cairns Rugby League competition. The young team made a positive start to the season with a round 1 26-20 victory over a much older Smithfield SHS team. In a back-and-forth encounter, tries to Timothy Mari, Nash Heath-Coppin, Oliver Nucifora, Will Palmer and Kade Robinson sealed a win.
Round 2 against Redlynch State College was a tight, physical encounter with both sides making frequent errors, failing to build any sustained pressure. Saints scored two unconverted tries to Will Palmer and Jake Sheppard to secure a victory in the dying minutes.
They face Cairns High on Wednesday 22 May at Cairns High and Woree at Woree SHS on Monday 27 May. Thank you, Mr Kris O’Farrell, Mr Rob Anderson, Mr James Will, Mr Neil Gregory and Mr Peter Ward for your tireless work in preparing the teams for their upcoming seasons.
Bill Turner Football
The Saints Bill Turner team made a hot start to the season with a convincing 10-0 win over Bentley Park College in their first fixture. The boys played clinical football to control the match with goals to Jackson Starmer (3), Ben Bridgeman (2), Harrison Neilsen (2), Jonathan Galea, Ruben Trevino and Sam Barber.
The team now turns their attention to their upcoming fixtures against St Mary’s College at Tiger Park, Edge Hill, on Wednesday 22 May and MacKillop College at MacKillop College on Thursday 23 May. Please get down and support the boys in these fixtures if you are available. Kick off for both fixtures will be at 4pm. Thank you, Mr Terence McDonough, Mr Jon Sorensen, and Mr Cristian Couto, for your work in preparing the squad for the upcoming season.
Intermediate Volleyball
St Augustine’s entered an intermediate volleyball team in the Cairns Volleyball Schools Cup during Week 3 of Term 2. The team breezed through the pool games undefeated with victories against Freshwater, MacKillop and grand finalists, Malanda SHS. The boys unfortunately went down to the eventual competition winners St Andrew’s in a hard-fought encounter in the semi-finals, coming away with third place in the competition. Congratulations to Evan Ung who was named the tournament MVP for his efforts. Thank you to Mr Shawn Moote for your organisation of the boys for training and the competition.
Cricket
St Augustine’s competed in the annual Streetsmarts Cricket competition during Week 4 at Walker Road, Edmonton. Due to the 2024 weather, the competition was heavily impacted with shortened and cancelled games during the day. Saints entered one team in the senior division and two in the intermediate division. Saints First XI achieved a convincing victory against St Mary’s, restricting them to 18 runs in a shortened 12 over fixture. Thomas King led the way with the ball with 3/2 and was well supported by Ryan Scarborough (1/2), Archie Ferguson (1/2) and Seth McGinty who also took wickets.
Saints made light work of the chase, only losing the wicket of Thomas King who made a quick-fire 14.
Saints Intermediate A team convincingly defeated St Mary’s setting 105 runs in 10 overs. Lucas Brierley top scored with an aggressive 45 runs and was supported by Samson Pittorino (29) and Will Palmer (21). The team restricted St Mary’s to 6-32 with wicket takers Ian De Lange (1/12), Blake Watson (1/4), Xavier Curtin (1/5), Asthon Salerno (1/0) and Edward Hammerton (2/0).
A young and inexperienced B team took on a much-improved Newman College side in their only fixture on the day. Batting first, Saints set Newman a target of 78 runs in their 15 overs with Charlie Chenery (25), Lucas Morlin (19) and Charlie Whitling (14) the most significant contributors with the bat. Defending a par total, our B team got off to a steady start in the field without taking key, early wickets. Unfortunately, 15 extras in our bowling innings cost us as Newman chased down the victory in the penultimate over. Hayden Brommel (2/6), Lucas Morlin (1/8) and Eli Jeppesen (1/13) took Saints 4 wickets in the field.
CISSA Sport
After a flawless round against arch-rivals Trinity Bay, unfortunately, our teams couldn't maintain the momentum in our Week 3 round against Redlynch College. Saints managed to secure a convincing 10-3 victory in Touch Football and 65-65 tie in Basketball. But sadly, we went down in football 1-3, volleyball 0-2 and AFL 44 – 50.
We then faced St Andrew’s in Week 4, keen to atone for our disappointing round against Redlynch College. All 5 teams bounced back strongly against St Andrew’s as we secured a 71-13 win in AFL, 54-48 win in Basketball, 5-0 victory in Football, 12-4 victory in Touch Football and a 2-0 victory in Volleyball.
Week 6 will see our teams come up against St Mary’s in a washout fixture before beginning their finals campaigns.

TCC Cross Country
Congratulations to St Augustine’s students who competed in the TCC Cross Country Carnival during Week 4. As always, Saints students competed hard throughout the carnival, achieving fantastic results. Saints had 29 boys compete, with a majority of those qualifying for the Peninsula Cross Country trials. Congratulations to the students below who took podium places for their age groups. We are awaiting confirmation of our Peninsula representatives from yesterday's trials in Yungaburra. Well done to all the students who got involved.
